Bowlby Ordered to
Duty at Washngton
Henry I Bowlby, former state high
way engineer of Oregon, who was re
cently commissioner captain of engi
neers in the rational army, has re
ceived orders from- the war depart
ment to report at once at Washington
for active duty. Captain Bowlby will
leave Portland this evening:

signed to one of the engineer regi
ments being organised for reconstruc
tion work in France. Before being or
dered to duty Captain Bowlby had beef,

Helen Clagg, 9-year-bld daughter of
George . A. Clagg, 265 East Twenty
eighth street, who was hit Tuesday
night by an auto at East Twenty
eighth street and. Hawthprne avenue,
died Wednesday night at her home.
Death was caused by a brain hemor
rhage,, resulting from the ! accident.
The auto that hit the child was driven
by Dr.' R. W. Benjamin.
At the time of the accident, the little
girl was busy putting tacks on the
track for the street carto run over,
and did not aee the approaching auto.
Helen Clagg was the fourth school
child Injured in auto accidents thla
month, .and her death was the third
resulting from such accidents v th!

Half of Crews at
Mine Are at Work
Butte, Mont, Sept. 21. The Ana
conda Copper Mining company today
announced that fully 60 per cent of
the crews in the- 83 ' shafts in this
camp were back at work. The num
ber of men is said to be Increasing
daily.
The mining companies are paying
the following scale: . Engineers, 17;
firemen, $6, and miners $5.25. Wages
are based on the prevailing market

don was born in Kentucky in 1839, He

He leaves three daughters and two
sons, his wife having preceded him in
death : more than 40 years ago. The

David Sheekey ana Mrs. C. A. Caswel',

ber of the Seattle police force, and
Frank Gordon, a farmer of Springfield.

Berry, a son of one of Oregon's ear
nest pioneer families and a well known
stock dealer of Linn county, died at
his home in this city Monday. Septem
ber li. after an illness of about six
years. . Mr. . Berry Was born in Mc
Mihnville. Or., and when a small boy
cams with his parents to Linn county.
He was in the meat bualness in Albany
for about 10 years and while there was
married November 10, 1857, to Mi&s
Euphamla Sellers of that city. Three
children' were born to them and are,

be mads has been given, according to
this official, who says instead that a
tentative understanding" has been
reached between officials of the com
pany and the union's heads.
Ths same official furthermore said
the union men and President Griffith
of the company had held a series of
meetings last week in which the com
pany head was again reminded of the
date when higher wages ar expected.
No hint of what the carmen would
do should the company fall to mset
the demands .was given, but the union
official denied that a strike would.be
called immediately. While the car
men are in favor of the 6 cent fare,
and believe, ; the company is ha. J
pressed for funds witlr which to meet
the increase asked in wages, they are
not bound by any agreement that fail
ure on the part of the publio service
commission to allow the 6 cent fate
would mean they were not to get tha

Ths increased wages are expected
regardless of the outcome of .the rate
case, ' and the carmen say that it is
up to the company to raise ths money
somehow.
Deputy in Coroner's
Office Is Arrested
Mother Says Bo Enticed Child to Sear
Office at Morgue; Woman Also Held
on Xls Complaint. (
Deputy Coroner R. J. Loynes was
arrested Thursday on complaint of
Mrs. Carrie Eaon of 91 Third street,
who charges him with having enticed
her small daughter into a rear room
at the public, morgue. The warrant
under which Loynes was arrested
charges' "disorderly conduct."
Mrs. Eaton was also arrested on a
warrant, sworn out by the deputy
coroner. She is charged with having
carried concealed weapons. Both were
released on their own recognizance,
and their cases probably will come up

ment the chief forester has designated
George H., Cecil, district forester at
Portland, to assist in recruiting two
battalions of loggers and lumbermen.
as part of a 6econd , Forest regiment
which will be known as the Twentieth-
Engineers (Forest) regiment.
Each battalion will .consist of three
companies of 250- men each, ' all of
whom should be - experienced loggers
or mill men. Special request "has been
made for a limited number of men
especially qualified for sawyers, saw
mill engineers, filers, ratchet setters,
millwrights, electricians, edgermen,
foremen, woods bosses and, motortruck
operators. Information regarding this
regiment can be secured at the district
forester's office. Beck building, or at
any forest supervisor's headquarters in
Oregon or Waarlngton. . i
Seamen of Steamer

. Astoria, Or., Sept. 21. Fines of 280
each were levied against five members
of the crew of the steamer F-A. Kll-
burn, which was raided here August 23
when a quantity of whiskey was dis
covered.. The men found guilty on a
charge of having liquor in their pos
session unlawfully are William Man
ning, Alex Boderling, Walter Anderson,
Robert Brady and Paul Lohr. Lohr
appealed to the circuit court and his
bond was fixed St 2150. Captain Carey
of the Kliburn pleaded not guilty to a
similar cnarge-and under 9250 bond
was released. He will appear for trial
on the next trip of the Kliburn.
