sioner, that the potato crop of the
state will show a 3 ield beyond all prec

would produce 195.000 tons of potatoes
this year and credited Yakima valley
with a yield of 110.000 tons. At a meet

also went on record as saying that $20

The United States will have to advance
upward of $400,000,000 if it In to get
the great flotilla of latest type de
stroyers which the naval board de
clares Is necessary for the navy to cope
with the submarine menace.
This money will be advanced to own
ers of private shipyards adapted to de
stroyer construction, it will be needed
for machinery, buildings and additions
to plants.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels, Rear
Admiral Taylor, chief of construction.
and Rear Admiral Griffin, chief of en
gineering and yards, today began con
sideration of the offer made by the
shipping representatives. - It is ex
pected that the offer will be accepted.
All of the reports of the officers en
gaged in the work of hunting subma
rines and ln convoying transports and
supply ships agree that the real remedy
for the submarine menace is a mod
ern destroyer of the latest type.
While the navy department Is con
sldering thi general proposition of ths
other shipbuilders, ft has accepted tbo
renewed plan of tho Bethlehem Hteel
company to construct standardized de
stroyers at a certain yard.
The first two of these destroyers
will be ready, it is understood, shortly.,
after the Tirst of the yenr, and .there
after two additional will be turned
over to be manned and commissioned
each week.
These craft will be standardized in
every particular, that construction time
can be reduced to the lowest possible
minimum.
