The Salts made enough runs In the
first Inning of the first game to clinch
the contest. With two down. Sheely
walked and Ryan singled to right.
Crandall followed with a crash to left,

ted in with a triple and the other two
counted.

that the Tiger gentleman handed the
San Francisco baseball Seals the paat

victors, they received a red, white and
blue pennant.
Boland of the Klrkpatrlcka received
poor support and waa not aa effective
as the battery gunners in the pinches.
Kracke, Drlscoll and A. Boland pulled
off some fielding stunts that were halr-
ralsers.
In the second inning two errors re
sulted In two scores for the man from
Clackamas, and a walk and a double by
Heffron reultd in another In the
fifth. In the ninth inning, a double by
followei by Pitt a single. Rave
the last score to the artillerymen. Two
Jilts and an error produced the lone tally
of the lodgemen In the sixth inning.

lock Holmes was some ferret in his
prime. There was nothing too mysteri
ous to baffle him, and he tossed more
moths on the Hindoo stuff than any
body who ever played headliner in the
dime novels.
But for the good of Sherlock's rep It
Is a lucky thing he was never called on
to solve the mystery that is pestering
Lee Magee, who was recently traded to
the Browns by New York.
The old brain cracker about Ann's
age Is a mere trifle compared to. the
Magee mystery, because Magee has all
the ear marks and the native character
istics of a great ball player, enjoys the
best of health and Is one of the most
willing workers who ever wore a big
league uniform, yet baa failed miser
ably as a hitter in the big leagues since
jhe became a member of the New York
0' ojclub. With the Browr.s he may return
o to form, but that remains to be seen.
Ha Cost Small Port-one.
2 Ruppert and Huston paid $22,600 for
ojthe title to Magee when they purchased
ins recora in me Dig snow as a mem
ber of the Browns and in the Federal
league with Brooklyn indicated that he
was a bear of a sticker, and he looked
well worth the price, considering the
fact that several other major league
owners were breaking their necks to
bid for him.
But just as soon as Magee waa made
a member of the Yanks his hitting
began to dwindle and he seldom de
livered a hit in the pinches. He fin
ished the 1916 season with a batting
average of .257, a very poor average
for a player rated aa one of the great
est outfielders in the game; a player
who had hit close to the .300 mark in
other years.
Tried to rig-ure Season
Some of the baseball scribes who
were taken back by Magee' poor show
ing tried to figure out the whys and
wherefores of his slump, and finally
decided that it was caused by over
anxlousness to make. good. But when
the Yankees started the season of 1917

Griggs of the Beavers each slapped
the ball on the nose at a .400 clip
during last week's series. Rath hung
up to a mark of .448 and close behind
him was Williams with .444. Griggs
hit .429 and-Tobln batted .419. Cran
dall and Ryan of the visitors brought
their marks for the week close to .400
by their great hitting in Sunday's
double header.
Williams made feven extra base hits
during the week, three home runs and
four doubles. Grigg. made a double.
triple and a homer and Crandall of
the Bees duplicated this feat.
Tha Sluggers Record
Salt Lake made 15 doubles, two
triples and two home runs, and the
Beavers annexed 12 doubles, one triple
and four home runs.

hitting deepened, and no on has been
able to solve It to date.
Magee was benched no less than 14
times thla aeason because he was not
hitting the ball. The first time he waa
relegated to the long timber. Bill Dono
van placed him there at his own re
quest. Lee is a conscientious player
and he knew he wasn't of much us In
the lineup, so he asked Bill to plant him
on the bench for a while and see if he
couldn't start hitting the pill after a
short rest.
Took IoiLg Taxation. ,
After a vacation of several Weeks,
Magee felt as though he could come
back with the bat, for he began to
sting the ball In batting practice and
wanted to see what he could do playing
regularly. So Wild Willyum injected
him into the lineup a second time, with
the same disappointing result- The
third trial given Magee came shortly
after the Tanks returned from their
first western road trip, and for four
or five days Lee smashed out his hits
regularly, only to fall back into the
same old rut Recently, at St. Louis.
IXmovan placed Lee on the bench for
tha fourteenth time, and his failure to
hit led up to the trade for Marsans.
