BISHOP SUMNER WILL CONSECRATE CHAPEL AT. VESPER, SUNDAY People Will Gather for Miles for Services, and Lunch Will Be Served at Noon. Bishop Sumner goes to Vesper Sun day to consecrate the char el which was completed last fall and Which has a unique history. It is known as the country church of the diocese of Oregon, and is sit uated some '10 miles from the railroad In Clatsop county and on the Nehalem river. It was built by William John son and his family, residing In and about Vesper. Mr. Johnson, who was born in Ireland of English parentage. came into the valley in 1876, and there reared his family. Mr. and Mrs. John son had 10 children, and six still re side in the valley, all being married. From plans furnished by Archdeacon Chambers they have constructed a small but sightly chapel costing about $1600. Here the family with others have been meeting for worship, with occasional visits from Archdeacon Chambers. Tvo services will be held Sunday, and they will mark a great occasion for the Vesper locality. People are planning to gather from miles around. A lunch will be served at noon. He goes to New York In October to at tend the annual meeting of the gen eral board of missions. Retired Minister r Dies at Coburg Eugene, Or., July 28. Rev. Sanford Snyder, a retired Methodist Episcopal minister of the Oregon conference, died at his home at Coburg late Wed nesday night at the age of 66 years. Rev. Mr. Snyder leaves his wife and the following culldren: Mrs. R. H. Allen of Redmond, Or.; Miss Nettie Snder of Coburg, and F. W. Snyder of Molalla. Or. While Rev. Mr. Snyder had been re tired by the conference, he had been upplying the pulpit of the church at oburg for a year. The funeral will be held at Lee Mis sion cemetery at Salem this afternoon. Bible Institute Is Attracting Notice The Bible Institute being held at the First Friends church. East Thirty fifth and Main streets, is attracting widespread attention. Rev. William M. Smith, principal of the Union Bible seminary, Westfield, Ind., is the speaker and comes for the first time before a Portland audience. Mr. Smith will conduct an afternoon Institute along the general lines of timely truth. The evening services will be devoted largely to the subject of Bible proph ecy and its application to the war and modern conditions. Sunday morning at 11 o'clock Mr. Smith will speak on the subject, "The Christiar-'b Present Duty." in wbi-'h the speaker will out line the attitude the Christian should malntein toward Individual, church and world activities in the present crisis. In the evening Rev. Smith will give an address on the "Signs, of Christ's Coming." No scholarship fees are to be charged and the public is invited to attend this institute. Freewill of ferings will be taken. The services will be held at 2:30 and 7:30 each day. New Guild at Good Samaritan A St. Barnabas' guild of nurses has been organized at the Good Samaritan hospital with a membership of 40. Bishop Sumner Is chaplain, and the Rev. F. K. Gilbert Westminster Presbyterian church considers Itself fortunate in having Major William S. Gilbert, chaplain of the Third Oregon regiment, speak at the morning service on Sunday. His topic will be "Our Boys." The church will be appropriately decorated with flags and the service will be of a pa triotic nature. This may be the last opportunity of hearing Chaplain Gil bert as the regiment is soon to leave the state.
