After trailing along for seven in nings the Beavers came to life in the seventh and tied the score and then Ihey stepped out in the eighth and won the battle from the Seals, 5 to 3, thanks to a pinch hit by the redoubt able William Stumpf of Baltimo'. Chief Smith, the northern California Indian, who was tried and found want ln by the Beavers at Sacramento last year, was hucled against his former messmates bv Boss Wolverton. The ' chief had them eating out of the bit ten hand until the seventh, when new tactics were tried on him waiting 'er out: BUI Steen Goes In. Fisher waited and so did Penner. Two walks were too much for Wolvy and be shoved Bill Steen to the center of the diamond. Babe Hollochen who had already gathered a brace of sin gles 'off the redskin, sacrificed on "Sweet Six" and moved the runners along. Then ensued a fanny one. Bill Hodgers rolled a tantalixer down to Koerner. Phil fielded the ball and started to throw to first,. Somebody forgot to cover, giving Rodgers a hit. While Koerner was gazing long and dolefully at first, somebody called his attention to the fact that Penner had raced, up to third, on which rested th6 lantern Jawed August Fisher. Steen's Feet Bothersome. Koerner raced over arid whipped the ball into Penner's ribs as he tried to dodge back to second. Things looked promising to the Seals, but Steen got his feet mixed up with the turf in some manner when he started to pitch and didn't let loose of the ball. A balk was called and the Beavers were . only one behind. Then the boys hopped on Steen In . the eighth. This is the way it hap pened. Babe Borton, who hadn't been doing much in the hitting line, opened with a double to right center. Wil Hams hit a Texas leaguer that Corhan couldn't handle, back of third. Sig lin followed with a sacrifice. This left first base open and Wolverton ordered the walking of Fisher. Stumpf came up to hit for Penner and Bal ' tlmo' Bill biffed the ball to right field. Borton was in with , the tying count. $ Pass Forces Tally. ' Hollocher fiddled around for awhile nd drew a walk,' which forced Wil . ltams home ror the winning run. Rodgers hit one down to Downs and was thrown out at first, but it gave Fisher a Chance to score. Dennie Wllie made the flpat out Lynn Bre-n-, ., ton was called lit to finish the game . and he retired , Corhan, McKee and .Plnchhltter Calvo in order. The Seals got away in the lead when Fltsgerald singled to center in the third and took third on Maisel's single to center. Schaller rolled the agate down to Rodgers, who started a dou ble play on second. Taut Biff managed to beat the ball to first ana Fitz had a. chance to score. Penner Fails in riftn. -'Penner's one bad inning was the fifth. .With McKee an Infield out. Smith hit one too hot for Hollocher to handle. Then Penner grew unsteady - and passed both Fitzgerald and Pick, . filling the bags. Wllie gathered in Malsel's fly and that put it up to Schaller. Biff singled to left Farmer overran the short ball and before lie could pick it up, Smith and Fitz had tal lied. Pick was on the way from flrt to third, but Farmer had the ball wait ing for that worthy and he was Dut out by Siglin. After that the Seals naa.jv.tue cnanoe to score. - A Single by Farmer, a walk by Bor ton, an overthrow by McKee in trv. lag to catch the rural party off sec- aua. ana Williams' out gave Portland i" ursi run in the fourth The acore: i Ban fraxcisco. Wholesale call ing off of college athletics In the Unit ed States since this country and Ger many decided to fight it out ts a doubt ful method of helping the nation pre pare for its struggle. Depriving the country's young men of their oppor tunity for physical competition and a consequent slack in upbuilding of tissue and health hardly seems the way to get them ready to Join any branch of fighting forces Major General Leonard Wood, the foremost military figure in the coun try, is a strong supporter of athletics in evory form. He believes in the games because they build strong; bodies, clean rrdnd3, and fearless char acter. There are others who want to see a certain percentage of athletics continue. Will Be Fatrlotlo Session. The Penn relay meet has not been called off-. .It has been stated by ath letic authorities at Pennsylvania uni versity that the meet will be turned nto a magnificent patriotic demonstra tion as well as a gathering of some of the nation's most prominent athletes. Harvard, Cornell and Michigan uni versities, however, have given notice that they will not send teams to the competition this year. As they are three of the most important schools who send teams to competitions of this kind, the meet will suffer from their absence. The meet itself should prove, however, that athletics are a neces sary part of preparation for military service. . , WU1 Take Off Strata. ; In addition to the physical value of athletics, there will be another value in the fact that college games arid the happy spirit that goes with them will serve to take a strain off the nerves of thousands.
