Two times Sunday' did the Seal bri
gade subdue tho terrible Tigers from
Vernon, and thereby did they wind up
the first week of the season with the
aeries in, their favor with four vic
tories out of the seven games played.
In the morning they tolled for two
hours and seven minutes before an
Oakland crowd which saw them win 3
to 1. The game was charged with ex
citement due to J. Cat Swing's offices
catching fire. All the gate receipts
were saved by Secretary McParlln and
the fire was extinguished. In the aft
ernoon tbe boys gave the crowd more
than they paid for. The contest went
for 11 Innings and wound up for the
home team, 4 to 3. Thj scores:

The champions put the toe-hold on the
Oaks for a I to 1 win in the Sunday
morning game at Vernon. This gave
Chance's men four games and the
opening aeries of the 1917 season.
In the afternoon It was a different
story. L Jack Ryan pitched one of his
methodically good games, holding the
Oaks to five hits and striking .out
seven, but the champions cTJaild not
connect with Clinton Prough in the
pinches. Ae a result, the Howard
herd won, g to 0, In their first shutout
of the new year. The scores:

Portland sportsmen are getting their
eyes tuned up for several northwest
tra& tournaments toward the end of
the month and a dosen or so will be
among those present at either tbe
Lewlston. Idaho, shoot of April 2Z-Z4,
or the Washington state shoot at Se
attle. April 28-30.
President John O. Oemaon of tne
local club will head a. delegation which
will probably be composed of Frank
Templeton. James w. Seavey. 3. H
Keller. A. 'W. Strowger, J. K. "Our
Jim" Simpson, Felix Frledlander. P. J.
Holohan, s. Ii. Morris. Artnur K.
Downs and H. R. Bverdlng. Barry A.
Pollock will not call -pull" at either
of the two tournaments for AprlL but
will center his activities on the Pa-
louse tournament later In the season,
he having established quite a reputa
tion as-manaser of the successful
Portland team In that tournament.
Manager Pollock has not made up a
team this year as yet. owing- to the
fact that several members of the club
have been called out for enlistment.
Frank Templeton has challenged A.
Ia. Zachrisson, present holder of the
beautiful Bristol 20-gauge trophy cup,
for a shoot to take place April it at
the Portland Gun club.
A. Wade Strowger was la tip-top
form at tho warmup shoot yesterday
and knocked over tl per cent,. being
high for the day. - .

Beavers Make Only Four Errors
Ken "Williams was the leading batter
of the Portland-Salt. Lake series, the
Beaver, centerfielder cracking out J.0
safe wallops. Including three . doubles,
in 22- trips to the plate for an average
of .436. .Gaard Gislaaon of tho Bees
was second with the mark of .444 and
Truek Hannah was third with .409.
With the exception of Williams,
.Wilis was the only Portland regular
to bat over the .SOO mark, Denny col
lecting enough hits In IX trips to the
pan to give him the percentage of .248.
Stumpf hit . 281, Farmer .272 and Slg
lln .2CL Sheely, Tobln, OH- and Rath
all hit over .200 for Salt. Lake.
Tho Bees outbatted Portland by a
margin of 82 points.
One of the outstanding features of
tho series was the wonderful fielding
of the Portland team, which made .but
four errors during, tho week...
All tho other teams In tbe league
broke onto double figures In the error
column. Oakland being second to Port
land with 10 boots. Salt Lake made 11
mlsplays and tho Angela made the
same number. More than one half of
the errors made in the opening series
of the league were . made In the San
Francisco-Vernon games, the Tigers
making 20 boots and the Seals 18.
Tho Beaver keystone combination of
Hollocher and Rodgers figured in five
double plays during the week.

R. Laughmgwater Williams and his
tribe of Spokane Indians trimmed
Rupert's West Side team of the In
tercity league yesterday In a seven
inning exhibition, game ,3 to 1. The
field was soggy and the Spokane
chieftain used only four or five of his
regulars, ard Just for old times sake
allowed Dioky Maxmeyer to exercise
his larboard flipper for a trio of
rounds.
Somewhere around 800 fans came
out in the bliatery weather to ssa tho
pros andthe half -pros go through the
motions,
, Williams used George Swarts, local
southpaw, Maxmeyer and Hal Bloom
field, brother of the : redoubtable
"Parson,' in the box and the only run
was made while Maxey waa south
pawing. - - -.
R. Laughing-water also had a chance
to squint at Johnny Brandt, whom he
expects to take to the inland empire,
johnny was well over the mai de mcr
incident to the Honolulu trip, and the
only hit made in the three innings
he worked for the semi-pros waa a
swing-Ins bunt. The bunt waa thrown
into the outlying district by. Brandt
and the one resulted. Lefty Helman
finished It up.
Nick put O. Helena "Johnson, the big
backatopper from Montana, behind the
Plate, and - he didn't look bad. Mc-
Bride and Crake did the receiving for
tne locals.'
After the game Williams bundled
his bunch aboard the Kspee and took
them back to Eugene, where they will
train until Friday, playing here Sat
urday and Sunday again, provided
there la no rain. ;

into great shape. Salt has taken a
great deal of interest In Campl and
figures that Campl will beat Johnson
by a wide margin.
Roadwork has been an Important
part of Campi's training for this con
test. Every morning for the past week,
he has hiked over the Seattle hills for
five miles with Harry Casey, who
meets Sammy Goods in Tacoma to
morrow night. In addition to - his
bikes, Campl has boxed six rounds a
day with Casey and Bert Forbea
Every boxer who will appear In the
Qolden west smoker Is in great shape
and it Is expected that this show will
be one of the best of the season.
Tho management of the Rose City
club has made several Improvements
for this smoker. Including the installa
tion of a ventilating system, which
will clear the hail of the emoke.
