dividuals within those nations, the Ore-
' -on Peace society was organized at a
meeting at the Central, library Tues
day evening for the purpose of the
promotion of peace.

The society goes on record as op
posed to compulsory military training
and service and In its subsequent meet
ings and in the literature it will dis
tribute this Aland will be emphasized.
Dr. Joseph K. Hart of Reed college is
he president of the society, . H. M.
' Esterly Is Vice president and Miss K.
Trevett is secretary and treasurer.
Dr. Hart will address a mass meeting
called by the iace society for Tues-
. day evening, January 23, at 8 o'clock at
library hall on the subject of anti
militarism. The society, which ultimately In-
- tendB to affiliate with similar organ
izations in other states, will give es-
- pecial study to peace problems as they
affect Oregon. The purposes Of the
society are set forth in its constitu
tion as follows:
Article 1 (Freamhle).
Know all men that whereas, war as
a method of determining disputes be
tween civilized stages is wrong and
does not provide a Just solution of the
problems or any problem which may
arise from time to time by reason of
International friction; and
Whereas, there has been created a
demand for compulsory military service
and training in the United States which
Is opposed to American ideals of citi
zenship and constitutes a menace to
social, industrial and political liber
ties; and
Whereas, Justice between nations
cannot exist until economic Justice ex
" lsts between Individuals within such
nations.
Article ZZ (Objects and Purposes).
Now therefore, we, the undersigned,
hereby associate ourselves together for
the following purposes, namely:
To advance the cause of peace among
rations, to hasten the abolition of in
ternational war and to encourage and
promote a peaceful settlement of ln
; ternatlonal differences, and In partic
ular, (a) To promote a thorough and
scientific Investigation and study of
the causes of war and of the practl-

(b) To aid In the development of In-
ternatlonal law and a general agree
ment on the rules thereof and the ac
."i ceptance of the same among nations.
(c) To diffuse Information and to
educate public opinion regarding the

(d) To establish a better under
j standing of international rights and
duties and a more perfect sense of in
ternational Justice among the inhabt-
: tants of civilised and other countries.
(e) To cultivate feelings of mutual
friendliness between the Inhabitants of
different countries and to Increase the
knowledge and understanding of each
. other by the several nations and
peoples.
(f) To promote a general acceptance
" of peaceable methods in the settlement
Of international disputes.
(g) To maintain, promote and assist
