steamer Ernest IX. Meyer was launched
from the Wilson shipyards this morn
ing. Miss Gertrude Cochran, the
8-year-old daughter "of Mr. and Mrs.
8. J Cochran of Portland, christened
the vessel, breaking a bottle of cham
palgne across the bow of the craft as
she slid gracefully down the ways.
The father of the young sponsor Is
the superintendent of construction at
the Wilson yards. A large crowd was
present at the ceremonies. Including
visitors from Portland, St. Helens.
Grays River and other points. The
change in the name of the vessel from
Latourell to Ernest II- Meyer was
made at the last moment.

on a charge of impersonating a gov
ernment officer for the purpose of
defrauding. He Is alleged to have rep-'
relented himself as a consulting elec
trical engineer of the United States
navy to McCargar, Bates St Lively, In
surance agents, and on claims ef de
siring to obtain Insurance policies for
his "Honolulu force" attempted to se
cure "temporary loans. His spurious
orders for three locomotives and 1009
tons of railroad iron caused Investiga
tions through which he was apprehend
ed by the Portland police. He is now
in the county Jail.

W. Bettlt Feather & Bedding company,

ation, starting in a small way between
eight and nine years ago, now occu
pies a brick structure affording 25.000
square feet of space, but the business
has so expanded that more room is de
manded, and a couple of new locations
sre nnder consideration. Mr. Pettit
says the company will erect its own
building, containing as much as 40000
square feet of floor room, and that it
will likely be of reinforced concrete.
The output of the factory consists of
woven wire bedsprings. mattresses,
feather pillows and bed comforts, and
is worth about $100,000 per annum. It
has the only quilting machine on the
coast, and It is a curiosity and a won
der In Its operation.
