Chopin's Compositions. "Chopin's
Compositions" will be the subject of
a lecture-recital of organ music to b
given in the Reed? college chapel this
evening at 8 o'clock by Dr. Max Pear
son Cushlng, assisted by Louise Hunt
ley at the piano. The program con
sists of a short talk on the composer,
followed by an hour recital of repre
sentative selections. The recital is
open to everyone. There will be no
admission charged.
Tin Protection AskeL Represent
atives of the Laurelhurst club and
Other organizations of the east side
seeking more fire protection are to
meet at the Portland Chamber of
Commerce at o'clock tomorrow
night to discuss the needs of th
east side. The east aiders are to
present' their requests to the city
council at a special meeting to be
held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon.
County Awards Oontractav-rCom-pletlon
of surfacing of the Canyon
road and the Hess road may come
at an early date, the county com
missioners having awarded contracts
for crushed rock to the Star Sand
company and the St. Helens ouarry.
The commissioners yesterday granted
an application by the O.-W. R, & N.
company to erect warning signs at
points 300 feet on each side of dan
gerous crossing on county roads.
Jr. Chapman to Talk. All persons
interested in solving the problem of
the high cost of living are Invited and
urged to attend a public meeting and
discussion under the direction of the
Utopian league in room H. Central li
brary, Wednesday evening, at 8 o'clock
Dr. Charles H. Chapman, In hi talk
will give a scientifically arranged sys
tem of tate markets as a solution.
Dr. Alzaman Ira Lucas will lead the
discussion.
Woman's Hip Broken. As the re
sult of a fall from a streetcar at West
Park and Morrison streets Saturday
night, Mrs. Elizabeth Robinson of
Harrisburi? Is at the Good Samaritan
hospital, suffering from a broken hip.
Mrs. Robinson had boarded a depot-

Jury. Sentenced Md Pined. Kdward Mil
ler, who was arrested several days
ago on a charge of obtaining money
under false pretences, was sentenced to
90 days In Jail and fined $25 1n muni
cipal court yesterday afternoon. Mil
ler was selling tickets at II apiece
for a dance he claimed the messenger
boys were giving. No such dance was
planned by the messenger boys.
Couple Bound Over. Sadie Brown
and Arthur Wymore were bound over
to the grand Jury yesterday afternoon
In municipal court on $500 bail to an
swer to the charge of larceny of $110
from Charles Nelson. At the time of
the alleged theft Nelson waa stopping
at a rooming house at 363 H First
street.
Women's Gymnasium Class. The
women's gymnasium class of the Ar
leta school district will meet in the
assembly hall of the Arleta school to
night, and hereafter on Tuesday
nights women alone will be admitted
to the assembly hall. The gymnasium
work Is handled under the direction of
the city park bureau.
Troop A Auxiliary to Meet. A
meeting of Troop A auxiliary will be
held tonight at 8 o'clock in th
Central library at the call of Harnett
Goldstein, president. Matters of Im
portance in connection with the work
of the auxiliary will be discussed.

cific & Eastern railway, a short line
of the Hill system operating out of

Man Hot Seriously Kurt Pete
Eranlgan, who was picked up uncon
scious at the corner of Front and
Flanders streets yesterday morning
with three cuts in his scalp and who
'was taken to the emergency hospital
for treatment, is not In a serious con
dition. A charge of drunkenness has
been placed against Branigan.

evening on "Ralph Waldo Emerson;
the Call to Moral Heroism." The lec
ture la the fourth of an extension

Balem, Or., Oct. 24. Assistant At
torney General Van Winkle gave an
opinion Monday to the effect that a
person who became a citizen of the
United States through the naturaliza
tion of his father, need not show his
father's citizenship papers when reg
istering. The practice of requiring the
showing of naturalization papers by
such citizens has been followed by
many county clerks. Van Winkle says
there Is nothing in the law requiring It,

$10,000 Damages
Joe Winter Alleges That Defective

today sued the city of Baker for $10,
000 damages for the loss of an eye
sustained last spring In an explosion
on the pipe line. Winter alleges that
defective powder and fuse furnished
by the city, caused the delayed blast In
which he was Injured. Harvey Shoe
maker, who a few weeks ago killed
Mrs. Mary Davis and suicided, was
hurt in (he same accident

grand jury has taken up investigation
of the case of Arthur Coach, brother of
Joe Coach, who killed a. T. Treadgold.
Arthur Coach Is alleged to have made
threats against several persons fol
lowing the tragedy. Joe Coach, who
shot himself after killing Treadgold.

Attorney General Asks Delay.
Washington. Oct 24. (TJ. P.) The
attorney general today asked the su
preme court to postpone reargument
of the government's suit to dissolve
the International Harvester company.
Motion was made by the attorney gen
eral to press the railway mall pay
cases of the Tasoo & Mississippi
Valley railroad and the Chicago &
Alton railroad, known as the divlser
cases, due for argument. .
