In a dispatch to his newspaper from
western New York, Mr. Vlllard re
port an unmistakable and surprising
drift to President Wllaon, which he
says is strong, "particularly In the
small towns."
"This Impression was strongly con
firmed by the Information gained dur
ing an auto ride of 130 miles today,"
he adds. "From the beginning we
stopped every man we met on the road.
So remarkable were some of the state
ments made as to Republican disaffec
tion that they were hard to believe and
oould not have been taken at face
value had it not been that they were
ao often checked up by Republican
sources of Information.
"Everywhere the workingmen are
flocking to the president, and If there
are only a few farmers in every elec
tion district changing their votes, it
will take a much smaller majority In

Fire Destroys Farm Home.
North Plains, Or., Oct. 21. The
frm residence of Fred G. Brown, re
siding on the Shadybrook road, north
cf here, was entiroly destroyed by fire
Thursday evening, nothing being saved
except a sewing machine. The origin
of the fire Is unknown.

state convention of the W. C. T. U.
cam to a close here last evening with
a meeting on the atreet in which Mrs.
Mattie M. Sleeth, of Portland, ad
dressed a large crowd against the beer
amendment and for tha Oregon com
pletely dry amendment -The meeting
waa held in response to an invitation
extended by the Commercial associa
tion. , Either Medford or Albany will get
the 1817 convention. Both these
cities extended Invitations and the con
vention left decision up to the execu
tive committee. One of the last ac
tions taken by the convention was en
thusiastic adoption of a motion pledg
ing the members to work in the inter
est of the eastern Oregon normal
school bill and Indorsing Pendleton as
a city of high moral Ideals, progressive
spirit and clean dtlsenshlp.
Memorial Service Held.
It was followed, by a tribute to Mrs.
E. B. Andrews Of Clackamas county,
chairman of the Blue Team which won
the membership contest from the Gold
Team captained by Mrs. Hattie Wilson
of Corvallis. In her honor the pulpit
was decorated in blue.
A symposium waa also held Friday at
which a number of prominent Pendle
ton cltlsens testified to the prosperity
of Pendleton under prohibition.

Coach, who Thursday shot and killed
City Attorney O. T. Treadgold of Ban
don, is still alive. Ha shot a 'bullet
through the front part of his
head, penetrating bis brain, after the
murder of Coach. His death is ex
pected at any tlino.
The body of Treadgold was taken

curred, to Bandon.- The funeral will
be held there Sunday. It Is said that

Denver, Oct. 21. (U. P.) Last Sat
niday John Kelly, who weighs 265
pounds, was sentenced to the county
Jail for begging on the streets. When
sentenced he thre-.r his wooden leg at
the Judge. Sunday be "mixed" with
another prisoner at the Jail and drew
the dungeon.
Then he refused to eat until yes
terday. "I hope no other prisoners will diet
themselves," said Warden Kratke to
day. "This man Kelly has finished all
the food and is starting In on the
crockery."

Factory Has Prospered by
Industry and Square Dealing
Here is a story indicative of what may be accomplished in Portland in
the manufacturing line by men of ceaseless industry, high ideals and strict
integrity:
For many years up to 1904, Theodore Bergmann owned and operated
a small shoe shop in which repairing was the chief industry. Being an am
bitious man he was not content with so small a" business, and in that year
incorporated a shoe factory with a capital of 1000. Two men and himself
constituted its working force. From the beginning his motto was, "the best
that can be made of leather," and from that dv to this never has lowered
the standard in the smallest particular. A good name and first-class
products, he declares, are inseparably linked together, and at least one of
these treasures cannot be acquired without the other.
GROWTH HAS BEEN CONSTANT
Though not rapid at the beginning the growth of the Bergmann shoe
factory, 621 Thurman street, has been continuous. It had not been long
in operation until its capital was increased to S5000, then to $l 0,000, and
later to 50,000, and its working force from the three originals to 40 skilled
workmen, among them two sons and two sons-in-laws of Mr. Bergmann.
One of the former is cutter in the faactory, and his father's solemn injunc
tion to not turn out a shoe not "the best that can be made olgleather," is
most rigidly adhered to, and now, after 12 years of manufacturing experi
ence, is more and more stoutly demanded. s
"The name of the Bergmann shoe is svnonomous with the best shoe
factory production," Mr. Bergmann declares, "and I would not exchange
that distinction for all the money I ever have seen or expect to see. I prize
my good name more than I can tell you. It is more to me than a fortune,
and 1 assure you I shall maintain and deserve It so long as 1 live: Honesty

the making of my business and the cause- of the increase of my workers
from three to 40 men.
HAS WORKED
"But my success has not been
have worked like a nailer. I went with the business men's excursion to
Coos Bay last week. I rode in a Pullman. It was a wonderful transforma
tion from the footpath and wagon road I had previously traveled over the
mountains on foot in order to sell shoej to Coos Bay merchants, for I have
been my own salesman all these years. I have sold my own goods, and,
therefore, know that they have not been misrepresented. At times I have
found reports preceding me that 'Bergmann has sold out,' and 'Bergmann is
aeaa, circulated lor tne purpose of getting one of my customers away from
me. -To counteract these misrepresentations, I at last had large cards
printed offering a reward of 100 for evidence that would convict anyone
guilty of the falsehood, and they were hung up In the stores of my friends
in the four Pacific coast states. This effectually stopped the rumors.
RECEIVED A GOLD MEDAL
"At the Panama-Pacific International Exposition at San Francisco our
factory was awarded a gold medal,
given it, a tact oi whicn l am proud, for the reason that it was merit re
warded. It covered our entire exhibit, consisting of loggers', cruisers',
mill men's, and our comfort Webfoot dress shoe for business men, as well
as our sportsmen's footwear Intended for hunters, fishermen and' mountain
climbing. These latter are the pride of dealers in sporting goods, and hun
dreds of pairs are sold each fall.
"And here Is a letter from Ernest
Minneapolis. Read it."
It stated that the writer had walked 2500 miles In a 9.50 pair of
Bergmann shoes, and they were still in perfect order. Mr. Paul said he
could walk back from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, and vet his shoes would
not be worn out.
"I have not a bit of fault to find
the matter of patronage," Mr. Bergmann declared, "but still if the men and
youths of this region would stick to
money in their footwear bills, and I
workers, in tne lumper regions l nave an immense trade. Lumbermen
long ago learned the value of our product, pay our price and are satisfied.
NAME WRONGLY SPELLED
"By the way, while on the Coos Bay excursion I noticed a teleeram In
The Journal in which my name was spelled 'Bertmann.' Wonder if that was
the fault of the telegrapher or of the printer. However, the error didn't
break my Heart, nor did it make any difference with the quality of our shoes.

the good. will, confidence and patronage of the shoe-buying public.
"And, in conclusion, let me say that The Journal prospers because it
deserves prosperity, and that any useful Institution which deals honestly
with the public will prosper, too. ' But the dollar must not.be the one thing
bought while in San Francisco I was

claims to be the son of a Methodist
minister of Cincinnati, waa arrested
yesterday at First and Columbia by
Patrolman Cameron and Detectives
Colts and Howell, charged with lar
ceny from rooming houses.
Johnson is on parole from the
Walla Walla penitentiary, where he
was serving a term from one to 15
yeara for burglary. During his parole
he says he has been working for the
Southern Pacific railroad
He admits, say the police, having
robbed 10 different rooming houses
since October 9. This he acknowl
edged. All his jobs were done In day
light, and sometimes two houses a
day were robbed.

The fall campaign of the chorch
pension fund was started by a meeting;
on October 2. of the executive com
mltee of the Diocesan committee of
New York.
The meeting was held at a luncheon
given the members by William Fel
lowes Morgan, the chairman, at India
House, New York City. Plans for re
sults adequate to the greatness of the
New York diocese were worked out.
Within a few weeks all of the other
dioceses will start their active work
or revive the campaign of last winter
and spring.
