figures are for the lay of one year
from October 15, 1010, to October 15,
1917 the time set for the contest to
run. '
,(ln the sHps filed by Mr. Nelson is
a judgment of the bird as a specimen,
without regard to her possible egg lay
ing ability. As to whether the best
birds aro the best layers, this con
test may largely help to determine.
Some surprising results may be ex
pected If Mr. Hogan's predictions come
true, as he anticipates great rever
sals in form In the case of some of
the flocks which produced high pens
Jn the greut Missouri, Banama-l'aclf ic
and Victoria egg laying contests.
His estimates vary from a minimum
of zero to a possible maximum of 2So
eggs for the year's lay of any one
hen, and the previous record of the
bird floes not enter-, at all into his cal
culations. Poultry breeders will await
with especial interest the end of the
contest and the result of the test.

EGG LAYING CONTEST
Poultrymen Profit by Knowl
edge Gained at Missouri

With the progress of civiliza,tion and
aa the country becomes more thickly
populated the methods of fanning are
changing from the extensive io the In
tensive, and as this change takes place
it Is natural that the. attention of the
farmer is turned to quality as well as
quantity. This rule applies to poul
try the same as any other farm
productt
The first step to improve the qualit
of poultry was Cue poultry show. The
poultry show has done much to estab
lish certain characteristics in poultr,
such as size, shape, color, head points,
etc., hut the show ha little or nolh
iuj; to do with egg production, whb-h.
to the general public, is just as im
portant as the show ioinls.
Following the poultry s::ows. but or
a parallel with them, were the esp
laying contests. In a poultry show oik
learns the points in which one bird ex

First Pullets to Lay.
Kome'breeders contend that the Crs'

flock, for in most raws they were the
same age.
The order in which they began lay
ing and the number of egs produced
by each hen are as follows; First to
lay in each pen aeraged ISO eggs;
second, 1 7 ti ; third, 1!); fourth, J."..".;
fifth. lf.S; sixth, Kil; seventh, 1,
eighth. K.7; ninth, ICS; tenth. .'!.
It must be borne in mind thai the lu
hens which were sent to the contest
were all selected from flocks and were,
supposed to le very much alike in egg
production, but the first hen in each
pen to lay averaged HO per cent more
eggs in the Year than the last one to
lay.
I Influence of Change of Climate.
, Many qeustiops have l.en asked in
'regard to tiie influence of (he change
! of climate on egg projuclion and what
( effect is produced by shipping hens
i from the north to the :;outh or from
the south to t he north.
' At first thought one would think
that the relation of th" hen to climate
i would be the same as tiie relation of a
: plant to climate. For example some
I ciann that it makes a difference with
I crops as to whether they get seed from
tho north or the south and that to
ship hens either north or south would
have the same influence, but after giv
ing the subject much thought we think
we should not compare the two for the
reason that the hen continues her
growth and development throughout
the entire year, and her reproductive
powers are not limited to certain sea
sons as with plants.
We should always consider records
of more value than theories, so we are
giving the record for last year, wuich
in a general way tells something of
the latitude the birds came from.
All hens from the latitude of Brit
ish Columhia averaged Kil eggs; Mich
igan to Massachusetts, 142, Iowa to
Pennsylvania. 165; Missouri to Vir
ginia, ICS; Arkansas to Alabama, ltio;
und Texas, 170, while tiie pens coming
from South Africa. New Zealand and
Australia averaged 143 eggs.
Breastbone Test.
In order to find out the influence
of crooked brea s t bon. s on eg produc
tion, the same comparison was made
by dividing the liens into three classes,
as follows: Straight breastbones,
sligntly i rooked a;id decidedly crooked
breastbones.
It was found that the hens wiln
straight bones laid the highest average
number of eggs, and considered at lull
per cent, the hens with slightly crooked
breastbones laid 1)1 per cent and the
ones With decidedly crooked breast-
hones averaged t.S per cent.
The Industrious Hens.
While we have no definite data on
the time each hen went to roost or
came from the roost, yet observations
of certain hens lead us to believe that
tiie best layer is the hen which is busy
both early and late. We are not sure
which expression is correct, "The busy
hen is a laying hen" or "The laying
hen is a busy hen," but are inclined to I
believe that there is some truth is
both expressions, so much so that
neither expression should be used to
the exclusion of the other.
A number of observations were made
to determine the location of best hen
at night while on the roost.
The roosts were on a level; the point
to be observed was to see if the high
laying hens selected any certain place
to roost relative to the front or back.
This series of observations indicated
that there was no difference, for good
hens were found on all parts of the
roosts.
Sise of Comb.
There is evidently a close relation
between the comb and the reproductive
organs, for at the time one develops
the other develops. But the si

a good guide in the selection of ecu- !
producers, but nearly every good layer !

Many tests have been made hv eom-
paring the birds in each pen. selecting!
the two out of 10 havine the larc-est !
combs and the? two having the smallest
oombs, while the other six are con
sidered medium. Of course, there are
some strums winch have larger tombs i
than others, but we consider the com- 1
paratlve test fair to all pens. !
Comparing on a basis of ioo per cent
forthe highest producers, the average
of 7o tests of all varieties shows medium-sized
combs 100 per cent largest
combs 89 per cent and smallest cornbs
87 per cent.
The good layers usually have me
dium sized, well developed combs
while many of tne high layers have
large combs, yet a large per cent of the
nonproducers have large combs, which
muH.es it unsaie to select from
size of
a comb alone.
Molting1 Test.
Questions are often asked
as to
wntch Is the best hen. the
one that
molts early or the one that molt
late.
in order to determine this
question,
the month of October was taken as the
month for observation.
It was noted that of the Jiens which
molted early would not lay in October
but thb bne which molted late might
continue to lay during this month.
It was noted that of the hens which
laid the greatest number of eggs dur
ing uctooer 76 per cent ofithem were-
me mgiiesi producers lor the year
. All hens which laid during October
averaged 177 eggs per Jben. while all
hens which did not lay in October av
eraged 153 eggs per hen.
The best layers molt almost all over
at once, which is done late in the
season.
Although many of the points men
tioned are of value to the breeder who
wants to improve his flock in a general
way by weeding put tiie nonproductive,
yet the only method of selection which
can be relied .upon definitely is the
trap nest, and the trap nest which
catches the hen and holds her till she
is released is the inoiit satisfactory,
for it is just as important to know
the egg laid by a certain hen as it is
to know that the hen laid, for it is in
this way that we are able to pedigree
the chicks when hatched. The trap
nest is the surest and best method of
selecting the high egg producers. It is
advisable to trapnest during the breed
ing season at least.
When a Hen Is Not a
Hen-Market Dope!
Strictly speaking, a hen is a hen,
but upon the wholesale produce mar
kets a hen is sometimes known as
otherwise.
When the wholesale trade speaks of
bens, it invariably means the lower
!r-ed' of female chickens. Chief
imong these is the big Plymouth Rock
nd for such offerings, the extreme
tuotations are always obtainable.
When the smaller hens, such as the
'.rrwn Leghorn, are offered, they are
old in the trade usually just as fowls,
'n other words, they go in the whole
ale market under the (juotation of
nixed fowls or chickens.
This fact is not generally known
unong the smaller shippers of poultry
o the wholesale market. This natu
ully Is the cause of considerable con
flict between the country shipper and
die wholesaler.
Heavy liens, as a rule, command a
liberal premium over regular fowls in
the wholesale trade. The premiumis
never less than one-half cent a pound,
but, generally speaking, the amount
received is from 1 to 1' cents higher
atid occasionally as much as 2 cents
premium is received.
There is a certain class of trade In
every large wholesale market of the
country that demandj iiens. as they are
known in the trade. These buyers
would rather pay tho premium for the
heavier fowls than to accept the
smaller chickens at the lower price.
While chickens may be chickens. It
can be plainly seen that in the minds
of certain buyers there is a big dif
ference. As long as they are the buy
ers and are willing to pay for what
they want, it is iuite natural that
wholesalers should cater to them.

That There Is Safe and Sound Method for Large Gains.
The outlook for Portland Is getting
better every day. So is the outlook for

At a recent meeting of the Portland
Realty Hoard it was brought out by
the representative who attended the
national convention at Minneapolis and
later brought three members of the
International Real Estate Associates to
Portland, where they have taken an
option on Westover Terraces for near
ly $1,000,100, that easterners were bet
ter aware of the opportunity in Port
land than people who have lived here
all their lives.
It was emphasized that real estate
values are lower at the present time
in Portland than any other city of the
same population in the 1'nited States.
That is the reason that Portlad is
receiving attention from easterners.
There is another rumor that Minne
apolis capital is contemplating the
purchase of another whole residential
district iu Portland.
