George C. Mason, appointed to the

carry out these ldeaa as a member
of the civil service board.
"My views regarding civil service
are somewhat positive," ha said. "I
believe that civil service is for the
good- of the public and that protec
tion for the individual Is only lnci
dental. I believe that a city am
ploye should be keptvln aervlce only
as Ions as he is efficient and the
public Is well served. ' I do not be
lieve that civil service is to give a

Mr. Mason was before the council

The plans for the National Tube com

Can't Eemove Lines,
Will Bepaint Them
Middle Parking Tlmn Strips for Antes
Cause of Considerable Annoyance to-
the City Engineer.
Last week Commissioner deck told
the city council that the white painted
strips on Sixth street, between Morri
son and Aider, used in th middle
parking plan experiment, would be re
moved.
Commissioner Baker wanted to
know why the lines had not been re
moved. From City Engineer Dater he
learned:
That the paint used was of a new
kind, guaranteed to stick.
That efforts made with a scraper
were unsuccessful.
That gasoline and kerosene did not
feaze the paint.
That the only way the lines could be
made Inconspicuous is to have them
repainted.
And now the lines are to be painted
black.
