Port Orford, Or., July 20. Port Or-
ford liaa one of the most unique In
duatrlen on U$ Pacific coaat. It la
the killing of sea Hons and the sale
of their hlJes, whiskers, gall anJ
other parts. I have Investigated and
written up many unique Industries,
such as the making of wooden decoy
ducks, the gathering and sale of
rhlttim bary, the sale of. bales of
moss to the nurseries, the gathering
and shipping of tan oak bark, the
getting out of snip knees, the Port
Orford match wood industry. and
many other unusual Industries; but
the sea lion Industry is the most
unique I have yet run across.
Llom on Blanco Baaf.
A few miles off the "urry county
shore In the vicinity of Port Orforl
a group of rocks, called the Cape
Blanco reef, projects above the sea.
These rocks are the breeding groundd
of the Ufa lions. Key 33 years George
Forty lias carried on tl-.e .justness of
killing sva linns. He was born In
Kngtaiul, but raised in Australia.
When a young man he came to Amer
ica and settled at Port Orford.
Deer are still killed within a mile
of the town of Port Orford, so It can
he seen thut Port Orford Is Bomewhat
off the beaten trail. When George
Forty came here elk were as plentiful
as rows in a dairy district.
"When I fiixt took up hunting as
profession here," said Mr. Forty, "I
used to get a gcod many fur seals
and sea otter.
Passing of Tut Baal.
"The last fur seal I killed on the
Port" Orford rocks was about 20 year
ego. I got $33 for Its skin. The last
sea otter I killed was four years ago
I got $S00 for Its pelt. The best sea
son I ever had with sea otters was
the year I got 22 skins. They are
so scarce now that you can get $ 1 290
or 11500 for a good sea otter ski
The biggest season I ever had with
sea lions was the year I got over 2000
hides. This season so far I have
something over 150 hides. We had a
big day yesterday. We killed 11 bulls
and fiB pups. I hae three boys, all
experienced sea lion hunters. One
of my hoys, liOren, was hired when
he was 12 years old by R, V. Hume,
the salmon canner at Wedderburn, as
a sea lion hunter. He Is 23 now.
Keen Eye Required.
"To be a successful sea lion hunter
you must put your bullet in'a radius
of two Inches midway between the eye
and the ear. This hits the sea lion
in the brain and kills It Instantly.
If you do not hit It In the brain tho
ea lion will flop off the rock, and
when they get into the water they
sink and you lose it.
"A big bull will weigh from 6500
to 6000 pounds and his hide wih
Weigh 100 pounds. I get five cents a
pound for the hide, so a poor shot
means I lose $5 on the hide alone,
besides the loss of the other salable
parts. Hunting sea lions Is no game
for amateurs. I have to have as my
assistants men on whom I can depend
absolutely. Often the lives of all of
us depend on the courage, quickness
and coolness of one man.
Dangerous Occupation.
For example, a sudden storm will
hlosv up while some of us are on th
rocks skinning the sea lions we have
shot. The water will begin breaking
over the rocks. The man in the boat
must put the boat alongside for us
to jump In. If his judgment is at
fault the boat will be swamped and
we will be drowned or tho. boat may
be smashed on the rocks. I have
landed on the rocks when the water
was breaking .10 or 12 feet high. If
you Jump as the boat Is going down
you will be washed off the rock. Tou
must Jump Just as the boat reaches
the highest point or as It Is rising
Just before It pauses to go down.
Tony Canino, a Frenchman, born In
Tunis, Africa, Is my assistant. He is
, always cool and not afraid of any
thing. We get seven cents a pound
for the hide of the pups. The big
bulls, the ones that weigh from two
to three tons, have six marketable
whiskers, three on each side. These
whiskers are about 22 inches long.
High class and wealthy Chinamen buy
them 'from SI to $2.60 a pair. They
mount them In gold. They use them
for toothpicks. You can't wear them
out and they are far superior to quill
. toothpicks. The Chinese also buy the
gall and certain other parts, which are
dried and ground up for medicine.
BnU Worth 910.
A blr bull brings me about $7.60 to
$10. His hide sells for $6, his whisk
ers for from $1 to $2.60, and the
medical products for about .' ..60.
XUona Destroy Salmon.
"If the salmon canneries would se
cure legislation putting a bounty on
the killing of shags, hair-seal and
sea Hons, the salmon would be much
more plentiful. I cut open the stom
ach Of a large bull Hon yesterday and
found 16 good sized salmon heads,
beside a large amount of other fish.
The shags eat the salmon when they
are flngerlings, while the sea Hons
and hair seals get them when they
are full grown.
The sea lions suckle their young
pups. The pups are born on the rocks
and do not take to the water till they
are about three weeks to a month old,
The mothers show great love for their
pups. They teach them to swim and
when Inland on the rocks they take
their young pups In their mouth and
slide off Into the sea, Frequently the
pup la drowned and the mother will
' arwim around and bring it back to the
rock, and when it will not respond to
her mudging and caress she grieves
over It Lots of the sea lion pups are
killed by the killer-sharks or gram
pus. Tnese Killer sharks are about 80
feet long and are very savage. Oh
yes, I have had plenty of narrow es
capes. I have had my boat overturn
lots of times but I , have somehow
managed to come out of It all right,
though I have lost four or five good
guns by my boat overturning. Sure
-I will take you out with me. I am
going out tomorrow. You will find
It rather gory, bloody job. Tea. I
will sea that you land on the rocks
.. and see the whole thing'

the meander line owners of tracts sur
rounding Harney lake, 150 or more in
number, are the real owners of the
bed of the lake and that the supreme
court three years ago decided this
question of ownership, Pred Otley of
Lawen, Malheur county, vigorously as
sailed any plan whereby the bed of the
lake' would be turned over to the Har
ney Basin Development company, rep
resented by C. B. McConnell, for de
velopment, in a communication to the
state land board read Tuesday after
noon. Otley said McConnell was trying to
get possession of the land through the
"corrupt swamp act vetoed by Gov
ernor West" and that McConnell had
told him he had secured a promise
from Governor Withycombe to use his
influence with the secretary of the
interior to remeander the lake and get
It listed as a swamp.
Governor Withycombe denied at the
board meeting that he had made any
such promise and asked Secretary G.
G. Brown to write Otley to that effect.
Brown was instructed to make it plain
that the board had made no promises
of any kind to McConnell or the Har
ney Basin Development company.
Otley estimated in his letter that
there are 7000 acres of land in the
lake bed and that it is worth $50 an
acre. This would make a total valu
ation of $3,500,000.
The board Instructed the secretary
to write C. A. Shepard, Portland coun
sel for Jason Moore, In regard to pro
gress being made in securing $15,000
required to complete the bond on the
Summer and Abert lakes lease. The
bond should have been posted May 15.
