Pacific railroad notified the state pub
lic service commission Wednesday aft
ernoon that It would shortly begin the
work of replacing 60-pound rails on
the Corvallis & Eastern line, from Cor
vallis to Nortons, a distance t 20.6
miles, with 80-pound rails.
Eighty-pound rails were laid from
Taqulna to Nortons, a distance of 35
mlTes, laat year.
The laying of the heavier steel from
Corv0lla to Nortons will leave light
teel only between Corvallis and Kus
sell, a distance of 14 miles.
The commission recommended the re
construction of the entire Corvallis &
Eastern road in April, 1913. Later on
It recommended an extension of the line
from Yaquiiie. to Newport.
This year the Newport Commercial
club urged action toward more recon
struction in the interest of faster and
better train service. The commission
urged the company to act and pointed
out again the feasibility of extending
'tie road fnun Yaqulna to Newport so
that tha boat transfer at Yaqulna would
be unnecessary.
The commission contended that this
- extension could be built along the bay
at a cost of nut mora than $10,000 per
rr.lle. making a total cost of $52,000.
and that the traffic and conditions war
ranted it. ,
No reference to the extension was
niade In tho communication received
Wednesday from thi Southern Pacific.
According to the commission, faster
time will be ponslble when the heavier
rjills are 'laid-from Nortons to Corval-li.

Pacific railroad has a surplux of box
cars on hand now, as compared with
a shortage of 675 two weeks ago, ac
cording tt reports to state public serv
ice commission. This means, accord
ing to the commislon, that the situa
tion has been relieved. There Is still
a shortage of flat cars, however. The
report from the railroad company Wed
nesday showed that there was on hand
363 open and 129 closed and under load
17G closed and 62 open, while orders on
file totaled 322 closed and 276 open.

Water Turned Into
Salmon Bay Locks
In a Couple of Months Small Ocean
Going Vessels Will Be Admitted to
Fresh Water of Union.
Seattle, Wash.. July 13. (P. N. S.)
Water was turned into the Salmon
Bay locks yesterday, marking the com
mencement of final construction of the
government canal connecting Puget
sound and Lakes Union and Washing
ton. Salmon bay will be raised 25 feet
above extreme low water. In two
weeks' time, when this raise will be
complete, dredging of the final por
tions of the connecting canal will com
mence. Sixty days from then, small
ocean-going ships will be .able to pass
from salt to fresh water, into Lake
Union, providing the city has com
pleted the reconstruction of a bridge
which at present bars the way.
It Is estimated that another year
will elapse before ships are able to
pass through Lake Union to Lake
Washington.
The. government work has been in
charge of Lieutenant Colonel J. B.
Cavanaugh.

Hiram W. Johnson as candidate for
United States senator, for both the
Progressive and Republican nomina
tions, were placed In circulation yester
day in six counties.
The petitions are being circulated In
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacra
mento, Alameda, Santa Clara and
Fresno counties.
The minimum number of signatures
required on the Republican petitions
are 1564. tbe maximum 6252, while on
the Progressive petitions the minimum
is 2303 and the maximum 9209.

dividend melon amounting to $2,730,000
was cut by the directors of the Willys
Overland company at the meeting in
N-w York yesterday. Of that amount
$680,000 will be in cash and $2,100,000
in common stock of the company.
The cash dividend was 3 per cent for
the quarter, placing the regular annual
dividend on the basis of a 12 per cent
return on the common stock. The par
of this stock Is $25 The Overland
stock closed at TlVi today.
