The pluck of Mrs. Mary Mann, aunt of little 6-year-old Martha Eckerman, probably saved the girl from assault and serious Injury June 2 when the little girl was enticed by a degenerate from the ylclnity of her home to a vacant house on the supposition that she was to be shown some rabbits which the man said he possessed. Her aunt followed the girl and the man, and entering the house aftet them, frightened the man away. When her aunt came the little girl was In the basement of the dwelling, coweds she says, by a revolver in the man's hand. Khe had not been seriously hurt. On the complaint of her aunt and her mother, Mrs. Lizzie Eckerman, 364 North Seventeenth street. Detectives Moloney and Swennes arrested Frank Pagan, 56 years old, a stationary fire man, who lives in a rooming house at Sixteenth and Raleigh streets, and charged him with attempted assault. 60,000-TON WARSHIP Ship Would Have Twice the Power of Any Vessel Afloat; Experts Say Plan Feasible, Washingron, June 22. (U. P.) Chairman Tillman today urged the sen ate sub-committee drafting plana for the enlarged American navy to author ize, a ship of 60,000 tons, 995 feet In length, armed with 16 18-lnch rifles, with a f peed of 35 knots, to cost $30,000,003. This ship would have approximately twice the power of any vessot afloat. It would be the largest craft that could pa.su through the Panama canal. "It could whip a whole fleet of or dinary battleships." said Tillman. Naval experts have told Tillman, he said, the nhlp is entirely feasible. Indications were that, the commit tee will adopt the general ' board recommendation of four dreadnoughts anH tlro lmttln friilmn fur V.a firwt i i i:ai a lJILt,ixiii. 11 i iiiinaii a nuip approveo u win ue coiinieu as iwo battleships. 2i'.9 N. 22d St.. between Northrup and Orertou builder. Kansas Was Keith's Birthplace, and He's l I P A I Ci A A 1 jrrOUCl 01 line oLaLe R. Keith, manager of the United Wall Paper store, on lower Washington street, first saw the light of day in Kan sas and he's been proud of the state ever since. In that grand old commonwealth, says he, the best of everything is found, even in the whirlwind line in Kansas It Isn't etiquette to call them cyclones. But It isn't necessary to re view the early struggles of his youth, dodging playful air spirals, etc. Suffice to aay that he was transferred to Portland some months ago to open new territory because he had proved himself a good business man. Patience, says he. is an as set. For example: Not long ago he had a friend who wanted an automobile, nearby was a neighbor who had Just the sort of auto his friend desired to purchase. K'eith "had a hunch" that the neigh bor planned to sell. One eve ning he was glancing through The Journal's want ad columns, and there w-as the machine described exactly. He phoned his friend to answer the ad. The man did so, and learned It was another machine and much better than the one Keith had so faithfully watchedr But the friend bought the car, for $800. There is no moral every body knows that Journal want ads get the business. NEW TODAY 6 Zoana of $10,000 ud TJp On Improved Business Property (or for Improvement Purposes). 3. P.
