GETTING POSITION ON

Is It cany to secure a position on
the stage?
This Is a question that has always
bothered young people ambitious to
embrace a theatrical career The
' truth Is, It la a moat difficult thing.
A very wealthy man called on Alf
Hay man, the manager of the Charles
Frohman company, last fall, so dis
turbed in mind that he was HI. Ills
daughter, his only child, had deter
mined that she was going on the
stage. The family was horrified.
Neither father nor mother could bear
to think of the girl going out to face
the world alone. There wan bo need
of it
The manager smiled good naturedly.
"Of course," he said, "your daugh
ter alma high. She wants to play
Juliet and Rosalind. She desires to
be another Maude Adams. To begin
with, ahe would accept a position aa
leading woman for John Drew's com
pany. She had heard a lot about Mr.
i . ew's leading women becoming stars,
and then Mr. Drew la so nice and
charming., She doesn't want Chin
, Chin 'Sybil' or "Watch Your Step,' or
anything like that. Her ambition
oars. Oh, I know the type You re
member what David Harum used to
say about the skittish horse? 'Give
her her head; give her her head.'
Qlva Up Idea.
"Let her try it. Don't attempt to
top her; don't place impediments In
her way. When she secures the kind
of an engagement she wants, then
come to me."
And all that Mr. Hayman knows
about the young woman was told In
a letter from the grateful father to
the effect that the girl had been so
often rebuffedthat she had given up
all notions of a stage career.
Even though a man or woman has
secured a foothold in the theatre. It
is no easy matter to obtain advance
ment. The profession is overcrowded.
There are hundreds of English and
French actors in the country seeking
positions. How. then, does any one
move forward? Specifically, there
may be one answer, but generally
there is a different answer for each
Individual case.
You who have seen Laura Hope
'Crews, John Drew's present leading
' Woman, would never think that she
had the slightest difficulty in gaining
a foothold on the" stage. Her appar
.ance, manner, personality, vole anJ
natural ability seem all adapted for
the stage. And yet all these things
would have probably counted for noth
ing without the exercise of brains,
which Miss Crews possesses in abund
ance. Unique Schema Worked.
Miss Crews had worked for a season
with a western stock company. She
' was its leading woman and could go
no higher. She wanted to Bet recogr.i- j
tion In New UrA. Reluctantly she
laid aside the reviews of her work.
New York rr.&naii-r3 would only smile
at them. They t.i.d seen these things
before. On the coast she was well
known, but then the coast might have
been Patagonia bo far as New York
was concerned or cared.
Reaching New York, the actress
discovered there was a stock company
playing a theatre that was almost
within the fashionable theatre belt.
It was not a big stock company, but
It was in & theatre that was not a
half-mile from the theatrical offices.
She wanted a position in this com
pany and got It. It was Immaterial
that the salary was not of the Joyful
brand, for that was of little moment
Just then. It might be easy for her
to get managers to go to the conven
ient theatre and see her work.
One afternoon George Tyler dropped
In at the theatre and next afternoon
he engaged Miss Crews to appear with
Eleanor Robson in "Merely Mary
Ann." Her plan of securing a good
engagement in a good role matured
I more quickly than she figured. After
that it was easy sailing.
