Several other young men of his ac

Winner of Panama-Pacific

Success in Breeding,
By Harry R. Rurke.
Buttermilk for young chicks is given
credit by M. J. Myers for a large
measure of his success In breeding "i"
Panama-Pacific exposition champion
barred rocks. The chick get nothing
else to drink until they are four
months old. "Buttermilk Is great to
mature the chicks. It Is fine to grow
feathers and it keeps their bowels In
splendid shape." Mr. Myers says In
summing up its advantages for the
young chicks.

American a-SKOtiatlon medal at
Spokane in 101 f, with tbj

was third prize rock at Panama
Pacific expo4tion.
For 22 years Mr. Myers, who lives
at Sixtieth and IMvlsion streets, has
been breeding barred rocks. Starting
with the Latham strain for pullet mat
ing and breeding from drove Hill, and
Thompson strains on the cockerel side,
Mr. Myers has brought his strain up
to a standard Hint will compare with
anything In the country, an witness his
winnings of first pen, first cockerel

first cockerel bred cockerel, first pul

at the I'Hnama-l'aci f ic exposition,
where he was the largest winner in

That utility Is bred with the show
type is manifest In the fact that Wal

nystem, gave Mr Myers second, fourth
and fifth places In Judging for egg
producing formation In ,i hot class of
all varieties of birds.
Mr. Myers feeds his chicks dry feed
to start with and feeds lots of dry
bran, the birds getting no wet niajih
until about two months old. Bran,
he considers, is a great ercg producer,
and knows of nothing better than Xtt
feed lots of bran to the young stuff.
At 5 o'clock In the morning Mr.
Myers gjves his chickens their first
feed. This is of scratch food, fed, par
ticularly in winter, in a deep straw
litter. At night the old birds are given
a light feed of a moistened mixture of
bran and cornmeal, fed in troughs In
the winter or on the clenn turf in the
spring and summer months. The
younger ones are fed grain at night.
