base for three years, was the logical

to 5, yesterday. The visitors were lead

Sheepshead speedway is humming with
powerful racing cars today, tuning up
for Saturday's race. Judging from
the terrific velocity attained by the
machines in practice, records will be

istered more than 100 miles an hour

Thirty Bases on Balls.

All records for bases on balls were
broken here yesterday when 30 free
tickets w re issued during the Detroit-
Philadelphia game. The former won,
16 to 2. Eighteen passes were issued
to the Tigers, while two Detroit
pitchers handed the Mackmen 12. De
troit scored eight runs in the second
inning and six in the fifth. Most
of their passes were in these rounds.
While the Detroit pitchers were ex
ceedingly wild, they kept the Athlet
ics down to three hits. The score:

Jacobs were knocked out of the box
and Hill was also hit hard. Tesreau
was forced to give way to Benton,
who In turn was relieved by Mathew
son. The latter pitched the best ball

Buddy Ryan broke up a ball game yes
terday that went to Salt Lake, & to 0,
which mikes 11 Oakland defeats out
of 15 games.
Buddy was ordered walked in .the
ninth inning. The score was 0 to 0,
with two out and Quinlan on third and
Rath on second. But when the fourth
Via 11 came floating up. Buddy laid it
down for a bunt so unexpectedly that
it went for a hit, while Quinlan came
sliding across with the first run. Rath
had made third, and Shinn put down
another bunt. It, too, went for a hit,
and Rath tallied. Orr hit toward cen
ter field and the ball went beyond the
clubhouse. The umpire summoned Orr
from third with a home run to his
credit. Thus five runs were acored

First Sunshiny Day?
The first fisherman who strikes the
Deschutes river on the next sunny day
is going to have a fight on his hands
to keep the fish from swallowing his
hook, line and sinker, according to Joe
ttutt, who returned from the Deschutes
river yesterday along with Fred
Rhunke. They put In two days fish
ing, but the water was somewhat
muddy and they considered themselves
lucky to land 40 good sized trout.
The weather there has been bad. the
rain filling the banks of Crooked river.
