CON ROM NOW BEFORE CONFERENCE EotabUard w Briefs of arguments supporting and contesting the legality of consolidation of the First Methodist church and the Tiraee Methodist church prepared by the factions In the church fight, to other with a petition asking for the separation of the two church societies, re In the hands of the Quandrlennlal canftrrinct of the Methodist Episcopal church which is in session in Saratoga 9pr4ngs, New York. vTha pamphlet supporting the con solidation maintains the regularity of ths proceedings leading up to consoli dation and quotes the decision of Judge Catena, which was affirmed by the supreme court. The "Insurgents'" petition and their brief are the .more interesting of the documents in that they disclose the method of attack agal: Jt the consolida tion. The antl-consolldationlsts contend in main that the merger was sought by Grace church because that church was in poor circumstances while first (Taylor) church was prosperous; thai majority of the members of First (Taylor) church were- opposed to con solidation; that under a church act of the legislature t " 1888 the Taylor street property must be used for church pur poses, and that the consolidated con gregation has not sufficient room to worship in the Grace church and there Is necessity for two societies. Charges of trouble making are open ly made in both documents. The feeling is illustrated by this ref erence from the brief, saying: ,. We have never asked them to pay our-expenses. Surely they cannot expect vis to furnish them with money to be used by them In fighting us. It is as bad as asking the Krupps to sell guns to the allies to be used against the Germans." Fireman Is Told He Should Be Ashamed Appears as Witness Against rather In JToB-Bupport Case and Xa Lectured .V by Judge 1 Cass Is Dismissed. "You ought to be ashamed to come Into court and try to send your father to the penitentiary in a case of this kind. As the oldest son. It Is your duty not only to help support your mother and brother, but your father if need be." '"This la what District Judge Jones told' Leonard L. Hueslng, 29 years old, single, and a member of the Portland fire department, when he appeared In court yesterday afternoon as a witness against his father, William Hueslng, Who was charged with failure to sup port .his 15-y ear-old son. . Mrs. Hueslng and her two sons live at M Jefferson street. Mr. Hueslng has not lived with hla family for the last six years, but he contributed to their support until two yeara ago, when work for a stone cutter became slack. After lecturing the fireman for his apparent attempt to shirk his duty, Judge Jones dismissed the case.
