HUGHSON IS ELECTED
MANAGER FOR LOCAL
BUILDERS
EXCHANGE
Boards of-Directors Create a
New : Position; Hughson
-Formerly Secretary.
NEW PLANS DISCUSSED
Xxcbur s Planning- to Work in
' CIosv Connection -with Archi
tects' Association of City.
a. Hurhson was elMted 'iMB
: -ager of th Builder' Exchange of
Portland, at a meeting 01 tne ooara 01
' director held Thursday afternoon in
tbo room of the exchange in the vv or-
raater building. This ia a new posi
- tlon created by the board, the duties
of .Mr. Hughson Heretofore bavins been
confined to those of financial secre
tary.
Ths -meeting: was the final fathering-
of the board prior to the annual
meeting- to be held Wednesday, May
t. ;ben a board of 18 directors will
be elected. The preparation of the
reports of the officers: for the past
year was outlined at the meeting yes
terday. They will be read to the mem
: bers at the annual meeting. The ex-
, change will begin the new year with
no indebtedness and money in the
'treasury. It Was reported.
-.The exchange is planning to work
'during- the coming year along lines
Which will bring, about a closer com
munity of Interests with the archi-
tacts' association of Portland. The
exchange has also appointed a com
mittee to bring about a closer under
standing with the'bullding and apart
ment house owners' association. The
belief is strong among some of the
members of the exchange that this
association is endeavoring unnecessar
ily to restrict new building operations
In the city. It is held by the builders
that the property owners' association
has taken an attitude of discouraging al
most all building activity irrespective
. of the merits of a particular under
taking. It is the opinion of the board
Of director of the exchange that the
two organisation can work together
without entrenching on the best inter-
V est of either, if a mfitual working
basis is reached.

New Deal Made for
Eoseburg Eailroad
Xandall Xitunbar People Agree to Con
struct U If City Will Build, Road;
Election on May 30.
Roaeburg, Or.. April 14. The Ken
dall Laimber corporation on Thursday
gave a bond in the sum of 110,000 to
the Hosaburg Park & Fair association
guaranteeing to construct a sawmill of
200,000 feet daily capacity on the site
secured from the fair association. This
is on condition that the city of Rose
burg construct a standard guage rail
road to the intersection of Rock Creek
and the North Umpqua river.
This being an entirely different
proposition, from the one declared void
by the suprema" court, a new election
will be called on May 20 for the pur
pose of authorizing $300,000 in bonds
for the construction of the road. The
Kendall people state that they will
agree to construct and equip the road
for the amount stated. This road will
be eight miles shorter than the one
originally proposed.
