BY CIjAPtA. INGRAM JUDSON,
i Old Mr. Gater.
A WAT down south In the land of
sunshine, in a quiet little stream
that flowed gently through the
cypress forests, lived old Mr. Gater
and his family.
For many years he had lived, iiwtht
oave made by the great roots of a
tree; so maity years that he couldn't
even remember ever living la any other
place. Ail hs knew was that particular
stream and that same safe, comfortable
cave. For, you see. old Mr. Gater was
very old very, very oldl Nobody had
tn faintest sort of an idea Just now
eld he was. Perhaps he knew, but be
certainly did not tell. No, sir! Mr.
Gater was .far too clever for that! He
never told anything not he!
Of course, if anybody had been very
curious, they mlrbt have examined his
teeth; but who cares enough about an
alligator's age to poke their fingers
into his great, fierce Jaws or to count
his great, sharp teeth?: Not 1J In
deed, no!
So old Mr. Gater lived in his cave
maybe a hundred yeare, may bee two
bundredl-and very well satisfied was
he with his life and surroundings.
When the cold winds blew from the
ea. some distance away, ha .crawled
deep into the hole under the spreading
roots and went to sleep In the muddy
water. And when the sun shone warm
and bright, as.it mostly did, he wak-
AJllsatoro have hard work' taming
- - juroana, yon . know. '
ened up from bis sleep and 'crawled
out into the warmth and brightness.''
But even though Mr. Gater was well
satisfied with his Quarters, he had to
admit that It was awkward retting up
onto the shore. Alligators have hard
work tourning around, you know. They
can swim and crawl and float and
walk, but turning around is something
they never ' do unless ; they hare to
and; then they do it awkwardly, be
cause their necks are not made for
graceful turning. ' And the way, hta
cave .-was planned he had . to go out
into the water and then turn around
and crawl back up the bank. ,
How nice It. would be," said ba to
himself many a time, if I had a nice
log "here handy! Then I-could back
out sideways from my cave and crawl
right up the bank on the log.- I would
surely like that,"
-.Over and over again he wished for
that log; but toe never did anything to
bring such a log there not he! If you
want to think that old Mr. Gater waa
lasy. you will think Just about right!
But indeed, if he had wanted to work
and bring, a log there (which he didn't)
there waa nothing he could have done;
for the . stream Itself must bring the
logs.
And then one day. Just, when be
wanted it most, a great log came f elat
ing down and floated down light to his
cave,' and It stuck in the bank Just
where Mr. Gater wanted it to.
. "Ah, , me," said Mr. Gater, as ,he
crawled out on the log and sunned him
self contentedly,-"everything comes to
him who waits, and this log is surely
worth waiting fori?

Miss Wilson declared that a. favorable

While Imagination plays an impor

people to exert themselves. Women

they let their Imaginations run
