, Flutter stopped" and listened. So
Still, did ; she hold herself that she
seemed hardly to be alive. . ,
'Tnrougn the woods, silent in the
evening dimness, there sounded the
strangest noise like, somebody crying
in distress.
"Something- dreadful has happened
to somebody, that's plain to tell," said
Flutter, who was very kind and soft
hearted and hated to hear anyone In
trouble. "But I cannot tell who it Is."
Let's get nearer; maybe we can be of
help."
So the two little flying squirrels
made their way nearer and nearer to
the mournful sound.
As they got closer, they could plain
ly hear a whiny voice crying. "I'm so
cold; , and I'm so hungry; and I'm so
miserable, oh-h-h-h dear! I'm so cold,
and I'm so hungry; and I'm so miser

again just that way!
."Who can that be?" whispered Flut

"Let's go a little closer." suggested
Flitter. "Maybe, when we find out
who It is, we can help!"
So they ran up a beech tree and
gracefully flew down nearer to where
the sound came from.
And what do you suppose they sawT
And what in the world did they hear?
They landed on the ground Just in
time to hear old Mother Raccoon,
whose voice they recognised at once,
say sternly: "Now, Billy, that s Just
enough whining for one night! I
don't know what I am going to do
with you to make you a nice, manly
raccoon."
"I don't want to be a nice, manly
raccoon," cried Billy. "I want some
supper! I'm so cold and I'm so "
"Now, don't start that story over
again." interrupted Mother Raccoon.

NEITHER men nor women waste
the time they spend In studying
fashions if they use the infor
mation so gained to properly groom
themselves. There are well groomed
persons and whether they.; be men
or v omen they have a distinct ad
vantage over the careless people. His
or her appearance is a valuable asset
It is an asset worthy of considera
tion and enlargement ' '
Changes In masculine fashions are
less pronounced than - those in femi
nine styles.' I suppose there are
women who wish they were men for
this very reason. Bat If the test
really came, they would hesitate to
give up the pretty things fashion de
crees as their lot
Business and professional men who
are wise realise that they cannot
dress 'In the fashions of a decade ago
and be considered In line with the
present - day procession. They know
that their success Is judged by. their
personal appearance. Also the clothes
they wear and their condition are
accepted as evidence of the value
they place upon themselves. It Is
easier for men to succeed when they
are well groomed. They make the
right sort of impression and their
spirits are buoyed up by a feeling of
satisfaction, in their appearance. - They
do not need to be afraid of being
considered careless , and failures, nor
being made. fun of. This is .well un
derstood by the men who succeed.
There would be less failures if . all
men realized the effect of correct
grooming.
It is just as necessary for. women
to follow the changes in styles. Many
large and beautiful minds and true
hearts . pass unnoticed because they
are disguised In antiquated and un
becoming dresses and hata Brilliant
women are often unrecognized as
such because . their brilliancy is
dimmed by their costume. Possibly
In the end they may have an op
portunity to show how bright ' they
are but often they pass unnoticed.
I suppose there arwomen who con-
aider a careless attitude toward
styles' as an evidence of Intellectuality -
at attractive and unique eccentrlo-.
lty. ' Such women delude' themselves.
No 'matter how brilliant a woman,
may be she cannot afford to Ignore
the fashions of the dav. She slurs ''
and Insults her intellect when she con
siders such a position, (
It Is not necessary for women tot
adopt extremes in styles to follow .
fashions. Some women In- extremes 1
look ridiculous, yet modified current!
fashions prove very becoming to;
them. . The solution of this problem is
found In the . application of in tell I- ,
gence. Fashions in dress, after all. j
are merely basic Ideals that permit!
development and a rather free range.
I know a woman who Is quite
brainy. Her friends In discussing her
frequently mention her unbecoming
costumes, and they Invariably soften
their criticism by speaking of her
mental power and capacity. It is not
a pleasant position that she holds. A
little more attention to her clothing
would not detract but certainly would
add to the impression she makes
through her Intellectual brilliancy.
Study the styles by all means. The
woman who declares that she takes
little Interest In fashions is silly. She
cannot afford to neglect them. Fash
ions may not interest her, but it is
costly to igpore them. I hp.ve found
it both pleasant and burdensome to
follow the fashions and I would not
think of neglecting to do so.
Tou must not be too busy to dress
as well as your purse will allow. It
is not always the most costly cos
tumes that look the best. The dress
that measures up to the fashion and
is selected o because It is becoming Is
the one that is the most beautiful i
when you wear it j
Study the styles and you will find
the lessons worth learning. Live to
day ' not a decade ago. The woman
who neglects to dress as attractively
as "possible places her candles under
a bushel.
