Turko-German invasion of Egypt Is
about to begin.

I said. "In a light-hearted manner, they
I have endangered the development of

Save had a hard fight, which will soon

Enos and Artois Both Famed in History
From the Nstlonal O
The rocky ridge of Enos, where the ;
allies landed troops, is a back
door way to the ancient Horn. It lies
about 155 miles west of Constantinople,
upon the Gulf of Knos, in the northeast
AeKean sea. Thirty miles away is the
northern shore of the Gallipoll penin
sula, around which the allied fleet
has been conducting operations for
months.
Enos, Insignificant, built on a rock
ledse, and surrounded by broad
marshes, becomes of unusual interest
to the world in its new character as
a base of land operations against the
physical heart of trte Ottoman empire.
The respectable antiquity of the town
Is attested by mention in Homer's
Il'ad. Formerly, Enos was a trading
port of some Importance, but It has
lately lost much of its export to the
adjacent seaport of Dedeagatch. The
city's harbor is roomy and well formed,
bvi t so neglected that It Is too shallow
for the larger sea going vessels. Its
export which it retains today Is due
to its position on the Marltza. river,
the great water highway from Adrian
ople. 80 miles Inland, to the sea.
The population of Enos is largely
Greek seafarers, commission dealers
and merchants. It numbered in 1905
about 8000. Its climate Is supposed
to be very unhealthy, malaria and
swamp-damp being as great obstacles
to the city's commercial growth as
the drifting sand bars that have filled
ii5 harbor. The first part of the way
from Enos toward Constantinople is
through a level country, but the
broken, mountainous regions begin long
I before the Bosphorus is reached.

The Artois, the region mentioned,
frequently lit the dispathces as that
where the heaviest fighting in ndrth
ern Prance is taking place. Includes
the territory of an ancient province ot
France and corresponds to the present
department of Pas de Calais, minus
the arondissements of Montreull and
Boulogne.
The Artois Is a rich, well watered
country, dotted with industrial towns,
but chiefly known as a pasture and
farm land. Its larger farms produce
an abundance of grain and hops, while
the smaller holdings grow great quan
tities of the fancy vegetables for which
France is famed above every other
land with the exception of Belgium.
The capital of the old province was
Arras, the name being a corruption of
"rtola." Among the important towns
In the region are Bethune, Aire, Ba
paume, Llllers, 8aint-Pol and Hesdin.
The great battle of Agincourt, between
the French and English, was fought
here on October 25. 1416.
The Counts of Flanders ruled the
Artois from the ninth to the twelfth
century. In 1180 the land was be
stowed upon the king of France, Philip
Augustus, as the dowry of his bride,
Isabella of Halnaut. In the fourteenth
century, Artois passed to the house of
By-gundy, and a marriage of a daugh
ter of this house to the Archduke Max
mllllan brought it under the banner
of the Hapsburgs. The French con
tested the claims of the Austrlans.
and finally conquered the province from
Spain, to which It had fallen in 1S34,
In 1659. The province has since re
mained in the possession of the French.

Two More Teuton
Cardinals Planned
Iope to Hold Consistory la March
Understood to Bo Another Peace
topi Bavaria to Bo prntd.
Rome. Jan. 21. (U. P.) Vital lm
portanco was attached today to the
announcement that the pope will hold
another consistory in March.
This la understood to be another
step in the pontiff's peace program,
though ostensibly it is for the purpose
cf conferring the red hat upon Moa
algnors Scapinelli of Vienna and
Fruhwirth of Munich.
The Pope, it is believed, desires to
Inform himself about the conditions
and possibilities for peace in Vienna
and Bavaria. His action in having
representatives from these two polrsts
continues his plan of conferring with
cardinals from the warring countries
in the hope that from these sessions
may develop a tentative peace pro
gram. Diplomats ol the allied nations view
with concern the creation of these two
new cardinals, because of increasing
the Austro-German representation in
the Vatican.
A Gentleman's Rebuke.
Josephus Daniels was discussing a
courteous retort.
"A learned scientist was attending a
dinner, and, as cigars were being in
dulged In, one of the guests began to
deride philosophy. He went on rudely
to express the opinion that philosopher
was but another way of spelling fool.
'"What is your opinion, professor?"
he asked, smilingly. 'Is there much
distance between them?'
"The professor keenly surveyed his
boorish vis-a-vis for a moment, then,
with a polite bow, responded:
" 'Sometime only tho width of a ta
ble.' "
