try ana Pet Stock association show
opened this morning in ita Quarters in
the Teon building, with a fowl but
joyous spirit prevailing, due princi
pally, It seemed, to ribbons attached
to coops and pons of winners.
They could not express their hap
piness -In words, byt the chickens, by
tbelr cackling and crowing, showed
Appreciation for prizes won.
And poultry Is not all that is en
tered. Tou will find rabbits, dogs,
cats and bantams, contesting just a
vigorously for prizes. Although the
rabbits have been judged they have
not been entered on the books as yet.
The bantams will be judged this aft
ernoon. According to B. F. Keeney of Eu
gene, Or., who was present at the
poultry show at the San Francisco
exposition, arid who captured a few
prize In the local show, the Barred
Rock exhibit here is as good. If not
better, than the world's contest. "Al
though I have not made a close inspec
tion of the whole show. I can say that
the Barred Rock exhibit compares In
any way with the San Francisco
show," stated Mr. Keeney.
G. L. Wood of this city won the
special prize for the beet bird in the
Show.
Over 35 different breeds of chickens
are on exhibition. Awarding of prizes
were completed last night.

Charged With Fraud

Charged with obtaining rebates from
the Southern Pacific company by
fraudulent affidavits, the I'nited Brok.
erage company and Ross L. Philllppi
of Portland were Indicted by the fed
eral grand jury today.
The specific charge against the de
fendants was that, they made 'false
statements regarding the amount paid
for grapes shipped from Fowler &
Calexico to Portland, and the price re
ceived for the grapes in Portland. Tho
Indictment alleges that the defendants
elevated the purchase price and de
creased the selling price. They are
alleged to have represented to the
railroad company that the shipments
were damaged In transit and collected
$600 in rebates.

the funeral yesterday afternoon of
J. Walter Branin. Portland manager
for the United Press, who was killed
by a street car Friday night. Th

In her ovvn spelling of the word
"corpse," Mrs. Marceltue Germain of
Donaldson, Michigan, was prostrated
with grief upon receipt of an official
communication announcing the fact
that her brother, Joseph Eli Jolllcouer.
had joined the U. S. marine corps anl
had named her as next of kin to be
notified In cae of death.
"If my brother Is a corps, of what
did hs die?" she wrote to Captain H.
T. Swain, in charge of the local re
cruiting station of the United States
marine corps, who bad enlisted the
man and was responsible for the noti
fication. The recruiting officer, by return
mail, bade the sorrowing sister cease
mourning, and assured her that the
"corps' to which her brother had late
ly attacahed himself was the "livest"
kind of an organisation.

nuilding. Police Lieutenant Harms and
Patrolmen Martin and Powell last
night raided the establishment of Fook,
Wa & Co., at 3314 Morrison street
In the basement they found a com
plete lottery outfit with tickets marked
for eight Of the 10 lottery concerns
known to be operating In Portland.
Vhey discovered also a small room
sumptuously supplied with . oriental
furniture, expensive carpets, neat lit
tle dejiks and silk screens, where, it la
supposed the white girl patrons of the
establishment marked their tickets.

Sims Quits Place
Salem, Or., Dec. 7. Examiner E. F.
Sims has submitted his resignation to
State B;nk Superintendent Sargent, ef
fective December 10, and will become
cashier of the Farmers State Bank of
North Powder. When he was appoint
ed, two years ago, Sims was assistant
auditor of the United States National
Bank of Portland. Superintendent Sar
gent said today that the appointment
of Sims' successor had been tendered
to an Oregonlan, but that he would not
be prepared to announce it for a day
or so. The salary Is $-000 a year.
