October Show Building' Gains.
October building operations make
the best showing of the year up to
date according to statistics compiled
by the American- Contractor. In 73
leading cities of the country the build
ing permits Issued for the month rep
resented work to cost IC2.ft38.777, as
compared with $44,227.2S3 for October
of last year. Tre greatest Kains were
recorded In Oklahoma City. 2027 per
cent; Dayton, Ohio, 702 per cent;
Wichita, Kan., 412 per cent, and Akron,
Ohio, 293 per cent. Portland shows a
loss of 32 per cint, the comparative
figures being 1361,030 for October of
this year as against $508,705 for the
same month lant year. For the 10

week was the purchase by D. P. Don
ovan of Idaho from the Barrett Estate
company of the southwest corner at
Twentieth and Ixvejoy streets, for a
confederation understood to be $100,-

Measuring 100 by 200 feet, the cor
ner In improved with three residences
and the new four story brick Bretnor
apartments on a site 50 by 100 feet.
This Htru'-ture was built three years
ago, an. J Is understood to have gone
for $53,00) in the deal.
In exchntise the Barrett estate, of
whlili Mrs. Kate B. Kills is president
and K. IJ. Barrett secretary, received
from Mr. I)onovan 60 acres of farm
land 17 miles from Portland on the
('l;tkaman river, and an 80 acre prune
ranch In ('larke county, Washington.
Negotiation. In the deal were car
ried on for the Barrett estate by W. A.
Barnes of the F. K. Taylor company;
nnd for Donovan by Otis C. Beck of
Portland.

Twenty-one isolated tracts were sold
at the United States land office in La
Orande last week. The government
realized $3150.07 from the sales.

Jones V Murray of Modesto, Cal.,

Rorintira district of Klamath county.
The sale price is reported as $10,000.

Colonial Residence Flanaed.
Phillip Buehner has authorized
Oeorge Eastman to prepare plans for a
typical New England colonial residence
for a 100x100 site at East Fifty-sixth
and Salmon streets. Th plan calls for
nine rooms, sleeping porch, three
bathrooms, two fireplaces, oak floors
throughout, rubbed enamel woodwork,
except dining room, which is to be
solid mahogany; all bathrooms to hare
pottery fixtures, filled walls and floors.
Hot water heat. Plate glass windows,
and a beautiful stairway featuring. A
double garage and stone retaining
walls are Included. Mr. Eastman will
have the plans ready for the contrac
tors about December 1. The estimated
cost Is about 8500.
