Blackberries Being Shipped.
Quinaby, Or., Aug. 21. Having es
tablished 500 camps throughout this
section, Collins and Starr are shipping
evergreen blackberries to the canneries
at the rate of several tons daily. The
farmers receive $10 per ton, the pick
ers one cent per box, while the pro
moters are . receiving $40 per ton from
the canneries. The berries have al
ways been considered a nuisance by
the farmers, as the briars are very
leng and strong, often holding sheep
in their embrace until death from
starvation relieves the animal. Some
pickers make $1 per day, but others
report 40 cents as being their average.

LEWIS AND CANTINE
MATTER TO BE LEFT
TO A FRIENDLY SUIT
Governor Withycombe An
nounces That Agreement
Has Not Been Reached,
Salem, Or,, Aug. 21. Governor
Withycombe late yesterday an
nounced that all the members of the
state highway commission and State
Engineer Lewis, at the executive's
suggestion, have agreed to institute a
friendly suit as soon as possible to get
the courfs exact interpretation of the
highway law and settle for good the
legal status of Lewis and Chief De
puty Cantlne.
Attorney- General Brown has been
asked to advise the highway commls
sion what can best be done to place all
the points of difference before the
courts, according to the governor.
In this-connection it is stated that
leading republicans have frowned udoii
the war that has been waged on Lewis
by .Withycombe and Kay and have
brought great pressure to bear on them
to desist. The republican leaders have
asserted that Kay and Withycombe
were fast losing ground with the
voters because of the fight on Lewis
who has been following the advice of
Attorney General Brown as to his du
ties and responsibilities under the law.
Pressure became so great that a plan
to have a iriendly suit was eagerly
seized upon by the governor and treas
urer as a way out of an extremely em
barrassing situation.
Kay has talked of a suit but has
Insisted Lewis should bring it. Lewis,
relying on attorney general's -opinion,
had suggested that the board bring
a suit if it was not satisfied to abide'
by the opinion' of Brown.

bought a tract in the Davis Lake sec
tion and has made great progress
clearing it. The oats in question
measured almost six feet in height and
will, run, well over 100 bushels to the

To Extend Course.
Salem, Or., Aug. 21. According to
notice sent to State Superintendent of
Public Instruction Churchill,, the school
at Scotts Mills will add two years to
Its course and become a standard four
year high school. Last "year ninth and
tenth grades were taught at Scotts
Mills. Principal V. V. Willis believes
that by adding more equipment and
becoming standardized, the school will
not only be able to do better 'work but
will attract many students from sur
rounding districts that do not now
have high school advantages. -
