Coyote Hunting
Quite Profitable
Pendletpn, Or., May 21. Proof that
the law passed by the last legislature
making the bounty on coyote scalps
has had the desired effect is had in
the records of the Umatilla county
clerk. They show that over 1700 coy
ote scalps have been presented for
the bounty since the law went into ef
fect in March. The total number of
bounties paid out up until today was
.1714, a record without precedent in
this county. The bounty paid aggre
gated $5142, of which amount the state
pays half and the county half. Far
mers and stockmerf declare the whole
sale slaughter of these predatory
j beasts will mean the saving of thou

creasing number of coyotes in the past
few years hasmade them a serious
menace, especially since rabies devel
oped among them Since the bounty

Italians in the United States are not
likely to be called to the' colors in the
event of Italy entering the European
war, is, the opinion today of Acting
Consul Pio Margottl, of the Italian
consulate in this city: He j has re
ceived no Instructions from the home
government regarding enlistment here.
"There are enough men in i the home
army at present,"' said Margdtti today,
"without calling Upon those in Ameri
ca. At least my countrymen in the
United States win not be called out
at the beginning of Italy's fighting
if she does go to war, and perhaps not
at all. The consulates in this country
hare no record of the number of men
in the United States who will be avail
able ! for the army. Information
this kind is in the 'hands of the -home
government, of course."

are not wanted in Judge Zook's court.
In fact they became . menace to the
wearer when under the eye of the
court. The Judge took objection to all
three when be observed -three pretty
maidens "all dolled up" in his court
room. The Judge did not wait until
court was over to air his opinions.
He simply called Rev. Newton K. Clem
enson, father of the maidens, before
him and expressed his. disapproval
from the bench.
"Ton should not permit your daugh
ters to appear in public in such . at
tire," said the court. ' . -
The girls appeared as witnesses in
the divorce trial which tSieir mother,
Mrs. Jennie Clemenson, had instituted
against' the minister. The court found
that Clemenson was not guilty of the
acts charged in -; the woman's com
plaint, and denied the decree, but at
the same time he took the edge off the
victory for the rest of the family by
starting a war on rouge and cos

By installing water meters the'- city
will cut down the amount of bonds is
sued for new construction. This is one
of the-points .Commissioner Daly says
is pertinent to the subject of water
meter installation. K J
The bonded debt "of the water bu
reau at present is $7,044,000. The in
terest being paid on this debt amounts
to 1282,760, and the .amount for the
sinking fund this year totals $254,460.
These two amouBts together consti
tute a fixed charge, and according to
figures given by Commissioner Daly,
this fixed charge is steadily increas
ing at the rate of $25,000 a year.
If the city continues to issue bonds
for needless mains where water abuses
abound, v it will be only a few years
before, the fixed charge will amount
to more than the total revenues per
year of the water bureau, says Daly,
and as a result the water bureau will
find itself stranded.:
