the west end of Umatilla, county la

cho, Btanfield, Hermiatoi and Uina
tilla met here May J8, and the follow
ing; agreement was made for the new
toad coarse;
"It is hereby agreed by the members
b f the special committees appointed
by the commercial clubs of Echo,
Btanfield, Hermlston and r xymatllla to
select the route for the west end high
way . connecting the above named
cities, in meeting at Hermiaton May
18, as follows: .
"First That tne road shall; run
through thosmain streets of the four
dties. ; 1 - " ' ..
Second From ' Echo t Stanfield:
Start t west end of UmatUla river
bridge, thence following the present
county road to northeast corner of
Fred Andrews' place, thence due north
to the south end of Main street in
Btanfield, thence up Main street to
Coe avenue, then west on Coe avenue
over railroad crossing at depot to the
present county road. ,
: , "Third From Stanfield to Hermisr
ton, commencing at intersection of
county road and Coe avenue in Stan
field, thence along the present county
road i past the Pelnmlder place ' on
across : the present overhead crossing
to the east s side of the government
feed canal, then following the . route
of said canal ' to the telephone line,
thence diagonally along the telephone
line to the crossing of the feed canal
above Hermiston, thence on the main
county t road as now ' constructed on
Fourth ! street to Main street,, thence
on Main street to First street, thence
north on first street to Rldgeway.
The above route was adopted' unan
imously, with the -understanding that
it ultimately be j reduced1, to a 4 per
cent grade as near as practicable, i

availing, I. I tow, a Japanese convicted
of the murder of Frank Dunn at the
Dundas bay cannery in July, 1912. Is
today facing death by hanging. The
date for Itows execution has ot been
set, but is expected to be fixed as soon
as formal notice of the ruling of tbe
circuit ' court Is received ;by the dis
trict court in which he was convicted.

Exeitement -was at fever beat today
among: the delegates to Che convention
of the Federated Woman's Clubs, in
session at the Civic Auditorium, where
the election of officers will be held
and' the so called "anti-politics amend
men t" will be decided.
That ths j election j will be warmly
contested is not doubted. Sentiment
Is about equally divided between .the
candidacy of Mrs. A. JV Jones of the
northern district, -who represents the
cities, and Mrs. Emily Hoppin of Yolo
county, who seems to have Jined up
the dele pates from the rural communi
ties. Rumors that a numoer' of the dele
sates are not satisfied with the man
ner; in which Mrs. Koppin was nomi
nated only served to cause the Hoppin
adherents to work harder' for the suc
cess of their candidate; jCharges that
some of . the 25 names, signed to the
nomination ' petition j of , Mrs. Hopptn.
were- - fraudulent. - have ; ; momentarily
been .lost sight of in the fight to ex
tend .the time of the registering- - of
delegates, who have the right to ballot
at today's election.
After a hot contest, in which both
of the candidates spoke, standing side
by side on the platform, hands clasped
and vowing, unalterable allegiance, to
the cause of women, the time waa ex
tended until 11:30, today in order to
allow lata delegates a chance to regis
ter and set into the fray.
Not only, will the election stir the
delegates, but the anti-politics amend
ments are coming up for determination.
That the amendments will be defeated
and the clubwomen, will reserve the
right to 'engage- in politics and bold
political office : seems to be assured,
although a determined fight ' for the
amendments will be made by a portion
of the- delegates. -
