Unanimous ly, vhe Albany Commercial club is be- nmai tne movement to nave tne govern ment advance money to counties for road! ! construction in forest reserves, in anticipation of future revenues, through which the borrowed sums would be refunded, and is in the hope Jof getting other commercial clubs of the valley to bring pressure to bear on congress to get United States Forester Graves' system adopted. E. M. Reagan, iGeorjge Taylor and C. H. Stewart have been appointed a committee to formu- kli.. - . I. - AAA.A.tA - -III t&ie yiaum lur mo uwccuun ui tin clubs in this matter for urging con grew, to take action The matter came up in the local club four weeks ago, when a resolu tion favoring Mr. Graves' plan, where- by the .roads and trails needed are to ibe constructed, the cost to be deducted ' f ronj l sums due the , county affected whel they become available, was ipaased. .Copies of the resolution were forwarded to the Oregon delegation in congress, with the request that every thing! be done to .secure the adoption of . ithe. system. ! F.j il. Brundage, head of the Santiarn quarters in this 'city, explained the proposed system and the system in effect at present, at the last meeting of the club. ' Under the present sys tem, according to Mr.- Brundage, the state last year received $61,000, repre senting. 2B. per cent of the gross re-i ceipis from the- forests. Of this i amoUnt, $21,000 went to Linn county.'' The revenue is realised from the sale! 'Jof timber and' from grazing and water-power fees. Income Will Increase. Ai more transportation facilities ; are installed and as the lumber market Increases, more timber will be cut and the Income will be much greater, accordinc to Mr. Brundasre. He esti mates that for Linn county alone, the f revenue will in the near future reach ,1100.1000 yearly, because the forest re - serve in this county is capable of ' standing & cut of 100,000,000 board feet each year. He estimates that this revenue twould be from timber alone, -hot to say anything of grazing and , Watcrpower revenues: -I The revenues are apportioned to each county according to the proportionate ; area of "the reserve lying within its ,: Ooundary. rne reason the counties get revenue from the government on in--fomes from its forest reserves is be cause the property in these tritoris cah"t! be taxed. As a result, forest thin nlan Commercial j clui has two particular projects in view; One is the, old San- tiam " road from Tjihtnnn I tr Linn county's cross-mountain highway. From Lebanon east. 70 miles of it lies In this county. This road is at present a very poor wagon road, as most of it runs directly through the Santiam na tional reserve. Each year Its condition Eta worse, as .there ,1a no raean of keeping it up except through tolls. From Cascadia to the summit,; it is maintained -4s a toll road by the Ore gon! & Western Colonisation CoJ ? The amount this company receives' from tolls is less by far than is spent for maintenance. Aecording to Mr. ) Brun dage, the company is willing to turn it over to the public, without strings. That it would ibe a drawing card for considerable ; trade between the jvalley andl eastern Oregon, and that It would be traveled by thousands of tourists, if it were improved and kept in proper condition, is the contention of the local Commercial club. In th .nt th. proposed system; goes into effect, it has been, hinted that the first money secured would be used to place this road In the desired conditio ni The othjer project la for better trans portation facilities . from Detroit to Breitenbush Hot Springs, one . of the unusual natural resorts of the Cascade mountain Would Abolish War By Single Tax Plan Absorption of Ground Seats! by Soci ety Wold Eliminate Xing and Sole Aicn, says u'Ken. . Mr. U'Hen set forth that the ab- sorption bf all ground rents by so ciety would eliminate the nobility and tne king in the old countries;, and the idle rich tin this country, leaving ev ery man (free to employ himself on land he wanted to use himself. The story it tells, mighty as truth 1 itself, might hare other titles. "When Men's Double Lives Meet" or "If a Daughter Followed in Father's Footsteps" would fit the silent bat moving drama. The man who is beginning to cast his eyes upon a fascinat ing neighbor, or the man who has already sent his glances that way too long, should see "Th Battle of the Sexes." The little gray woman rocking in' agony in her husband forsaken home is a picture that roots itself deep in your memory.':. j ' .j p -, " .- There are little gray worruen in many homes. But even more gripping is the picture of the daughter in her dawning comprehension of her father's Weakness. The girl, seeing her father in a dance hall with the shallow enchantress who has made him forget his vows, tries to shield her mother from the sight. ; p . But the mother does see, and though she sfips quietly home and bids her son and daughter say nothing to their fatheif of the adventure, she sinks into profound melancholy, such melancholy as presages madness.
