i Washington. Jan. 21. Representa
tive Sinnott preached rather an lo-
quent funeral itrmori in the bouae one
day last week over the remains of the
' standard apple box blil. He expressed
', it as argument at the Inquest, but It
) bad mors of the pulpit flavor.
,p ' It -was a pretty good speech but It
did not pulmote" the dead bill. Un
less the threat . regarding a certain
other bill the apple barrel has
' weight the bill will stay dead until
' rtt session. Undoubtedly it means
disappointment to many Oregon apple
growers, r ( .-
i 1 Majority Leader Underwood, whom
j Sinnott .slammed In passing, explained
while smiling over Slnnott'a speech,
the reason the apple box bill was not
allowed to go on the calendar as "un
finished (business." Each of the com
, mlttees, lie said, wm' given two "cal-
endar Wednesdays" for consideration
. of measures before it. Asbbroolfs
committee had used up Its two Wednes
days and Ashbrook had to give way to

to ao anything, but the chairman. Sen
ator Polndexter of Washington, decided
to break; the precedent. He summoned
Senators Norrls of Nebraska. Kenvon
of Iowa, and Lane, and the four of
tnem, constituting the whole commit
tee, had! one of the realest meetings
ever neia. . .
. in the first place they had a real
live, topic, vis: Why didn't the United
States buy Louis Uathman's high ex
plosive gun, the very, same, according
to uatnman, that the Germans used in
.demolishing Liege and Antwerp and
' other -Belgian cities' forts T Gathman,
wno wm present, offered the commit
tee considerable evidence toxshow he
had Invented an Identical gun several
years ago and had offered it to the
bureau of ordnance, but without con
Vincing the bureau.
The committee listened and dis.
'cussed for three hours and agreed to
' meet again.
