In charge 1 of Captain Henderson, was chased by the German cruiser Emden two ' months ago and was struck by a 'shell when off the wet count of the Malay peninsula. She was damaged con , slderably, but repairs were made be- fore starting for the Columbia, river. -The steamer left up shortly after noon for Portland, On the outward bound , trip she will dock- at the 8.,' r. & 8. dock to load' the supplies donated by the residents of this city for the re lief of the Belgian inhabitants. The Belgian food srtlp Cranley will be In the-Portland harbor late tonight, having reached Astoria this morning The Oregon Belgian Relief commission announces that she will proceed to one of. the mills to take on contribution of flour,. Next Monday the food ship will proceed to the west side munici pal dock whore she will load the con tributions of foodstuffs made by Ore gon people. It was urgently requested this morn ing by the relief commission that all Who intend yet to make contributions Of foodstuffs should do so at once, so that everything may be ready by next Menduy evening. All contributions are to be addressed to the Belgian Belief commission, care of the Mu nicipal dock. All rash contributions ' are to be addressed to Samuel Hill, chairman, care of the Home Telephone building, Portland. Oregon has not yet conti touted lit cash and Imperishable foods enough to make a carpo for the starving mil lions In Belgium, and the commission urges that the generous people of tne atate act at once. ' "Farmers of the Pacific northwest, and particularly of " the Inland Em pire, are prosperous," said A. r. Charl ton, assistant general passenger agent of the Northern Pacific, who has Just returned from a trip that Included Tacoma, Seattle, Spokane, Walla Walla and Lewlaton. "They have received good 'prices for their wheat, and a big crop is predicted for next year. ."Conditions are especially good In the Palouse and Lewlston district" continued Mr. Charlton. "With the farmers having plenty of money", the merchants are doing a good business, and everyone Is sharing in the farm era" good fortune. The banks are loaded with money, and are using it In a. way to stimulate trade. "The war is bound to affect wheat prices for. two or three years, and in anticipation It is estimated that the wheat area in the Palouse and Lewis ton countries will be increased at least 20 per cent. In other districts, Walla Walla, for instance, the possible area of wheat Is already near the maxi mum." En Route to Convention. E. D. Purchase, president of the Washington State Assessors' associa tion, passed through Portland Satur day en route for Olympia, where the association will hold Its .annual con vention beginning today. Mr. Pur chase Is assessor of Pend, d'Orellle county and a resident of Newport. He was much interested in Assessor Reed's office and equipment, saying he hoped to see the day come when his county might be large enough in point of population to demand one equally as good. "Lang Syne" Society to Sleet. Considerable- Interest has been aroused among old time residents of Portland over the announcement of the second annual dinner of the "Lang Syne" society, composed of 300 men who Mvcd and took an active interes in Portland before 1891. The dinner is to be held at the Multnomah hotel at 7 o'clock Wednesday night. There will be "old times" music old times cats" and talks by "old timers" on "old times." In fact the whole affair will be in the nature of an old times' reunion.
