'These are but a few of the expres sions of gratitude that are heard dally by those In charge of the Bureau. Mr. Berger of Berber Bros, .kindly donated the use of his automobile to bring the children Into town and the . four were given their first ride in a ; machine. With eyes and mouths open .It wonder- they sat on the very edge : of the seat all .the way in town from . An especially ; pathetic case which came under the -notice of the Bureau last week, was that of "a father and mother and .slap' children, three boys 'and three glrln, varying in ages from ' Your to 15. The family is1 absolutely ' destitute, the father being unable to get any employment whatsoever, al though he la anxious to do any kind r of work. One of the little girls- has a ' tubercular hip. The entire family ' Uvea in one room -and there are but : two betds and a cot, for the eight per- son to aleep on. The little 14-year-old ' boy sella papers; but he says he could n sell twice aa many if he had a cart to y haul them In and then he could gather ' ui wood and take It home too. R. & ,N. company offered to rent the upper deck of. the rajlroad bridge to the couhtyjat the same terms that it was rented to the city during the past year. The main .condition was that the county commissioners sign a state . merit to the effect that the rental 'suggeAed is not an adequate return 'to thejeompany on, its Investment. The , e-ther !wa that on the basis of the Vst,fear'a returns to the city from "the street car company, the county should! reeelve a similar amount, but . that U over the total received, by the city should be, paid by the county to !the company. Thei offer was declined by the coun- ' ty, the commissioners standing by .their (offer of $3600 a month straight . rental,' Under that offer the company must pay the coats of operation and taxes, but it -woruld receive all tolls from ( the street car company. Under ; 'the railroad company's new offer tha . railroad company would pay taxes, but ,tha county would Pay for maintenance, aa ia'the past, and $44,400 a year rental. . , The renewal of the lease agreed upon pending the termination of negotia ' tiona for the rental of the,upper deck ends i Monday night, and unless on Monday an agreement can be reached , or another renewal made, the bridge will open Tuesday aa toll bridge.
