The Winter Relief Bureau has ad ministered Tnffidreds of dollars' worth t I A .1 .1 tkn. .J of pieces of Wi-dJlng nnd wearing ap parel since It openod its doors for ervlce late In .Vovember, yet this la only a part of the servlco rendered either directly or indirectly through the bureau. The 190 baskets of good, substantial food KiVen through the bureau by Charles Kutleen of the State market, brought'Theer and satisfaction to many homes. Only words of grati tude are heard from those, who shared Mr. Rodeen's gift. A crushed and somewhat helpless Id man, whose wife passed away when their little girl was but 5 days old, nas been working around the bureau for several weeks. The little girl, now 13 year old Is in a sisters' school over in Washington, and a few days before Christmas a box of new htocklngs. dooks.. candy, etc.. was tjacKed no at the bureau, and tlte old man started for the Dostofflce with tears of Joy streaming down his face and carrying the first Christmas box which his little girl .has received in many years. Qlvtn Dry Quarters. A family of . seven found living in one damp room- in a Basement, was to- Uv moved into dry. comfortable Quar ters which have been furnished through the kindly generosity of the Ford Auc tion company, the Bell Auction com pany and" Mrs. Meharrey, wno gave beds, chairs, etc.. and the Salvation Army, which donated a stove. Bed- dins; and food were furnished bv the bureau, and today the family's outlook on nie is uriamer man it nas oeen lor many months. A family reported several weeks ago as being In great need of fuel, was "adopted" by Mrs. Julius I.oulsson, who went out to see them and found the family of five living in a little tent In. which the only furniture was a bed and a cook stove. A few pota toes was the only Tood supply. Every thing was neat and clean, and both the father and mother asked for employ ment rather than help. The necessary furniture and warm bedding were se cured by Mrs. Loulsson, and groceries, clothing and shoes for the little ones were sent out by the bureau. Occasional short Jobs are now se cured by the man, and their gratitude to all who have helped them is unbounded. When the bureau., first opened a young man came In late one evening and told a, pitiful tale of a sick baby, and added that they had used their last cent to buy a pint of milk. The bureau found that it was a oase of practical destitution, yet it was only of the little baby that the young couple thought. Immediate aid was gi.ven. The baby was taken to Ir. Robert Hall, who had previously offered his services free of charge to any one sent by the bureau. The young father spent many hours In the bureau waiting for a chance Job, and finally one came, the felling of a big tree. o well did he work tht hi employer told him of a friend who needed a man on a little ranch, the use of a small house and small wages to be given In exchange for the work. A bargain was soon made, and the young couple left with light hearts for their new home. .HtV-ent contributions Include a check for, $100 from the Portland Woman's club, of which Airs. U. J. Neither did he realize he was In the presence of city com missioners, rire chief and a real con stable. .;' The city officials had been on a tour of inspection Monday afternoon, hen they noticed the fire. Chief Dowell turned in a fire alarm, and the fire apparatus came on the run. A ladder was leaning up against the Bide of the building.
