London. 0 t. 22. Reports that Ger

took part In the operations preceding
Antwerp's capture, and that the Teu

slasin here today as It was conjectured
the kaiser's fleet was at last about to
venture from the shelter of the Ger
man Bhore defenses to give battle to
the British In the open sea.
The British public has been thirsting
for such a trial of strength since the
war began confident, from the numeri

that the Germans' sea strength would
It completely annihilated.
jThe story from Stavenger, Norway,
of the sinking by a submarine of the
British ship GUtera, off the Norwegian
coast Tuesday was not believed here,
no ship of that name figuring In the
lists of vessels either in the "British
naval or mercantile services.
News that German Zeppelin hangers
were being built at Antwerp and Brus
sels was not so Joyfully welcomed as
were accounts of the kaiser's naval
activities. Aside from all other con
siderations, the British have no fancy
for the property damage which might
be done by a successful German airship
raid, and the press was urging that
the government take every possible
precaution to resist an aerial attack.
From Toklo came reports that Great
Britain's ally, Japan, was experiencing
unexpected difficulty in reduolng the
German fortifications at Klao Chau,
the mikado's losses being referred to
as amounting to ".several thousands."

Madam Julia Claussen, world famous
contralto, who will be the soloist at
the Apollo club concert at the Hellig
theatre next Saturday night, is In
Portland. With her husband. Captain
Theodor Clausen, of the Swedish
navy reserve, the noted cantatrice ar
rived from Denver and registered at
the Benson today.
Madam Claussen is the picture of
health and happiness; although the trip
from Kurope was not exactly one of
.pleasure because of the European war.
The Claussena passed the summer in
Stockholm after Madam Claussen had
completed engagements for the season
with the Chicago Grand Opera com
pany, the Covent Garden opera and
the grand opera In Paris. When orders
were given to mobilize. Captain Claus
sen took his place In the navy, but as
only a certain percentage of the army
and navy was mobilized. Captain Claus
sen was given leave of absence.
Madam Claussen, who seems the very
exemplification of "peace on earth,
good will to man," grew gloomy at
the mention of war today.
"Oh, it's terrible," she said !n her
qialnt accent. "It la terrible. I am
so sorry for all trios people.
"We left Sweden September 10 for
Dundee, Scotland, on a small steamer

sea. From Dundee we went by rail
to Liverpool and embarked for New
