The Christmas Ship editor wan out for several hours yesterday afternoon and when Hhe returned her desk was piled ho high with bundles and boxes for the Christmas Ship cargo that she waa an hour and a half Bortlng and entering the contributions. The stack of bundles contained ev erything from music boxes and fancy hair ribbons to shoes and clothing and there were alco numerous letters con taining checks and money orders, in fart that book. "Keeping Up With Liz zie" has "nothing on" (if you will par don the slang) a book that might be written under the title of "Keeping Up With the Christmas Khlp." Yesterday was a banner day in point of numbers and variety of articles. Packages began to arrive early and the procession of happy-faced children and grown ups increased aa the day passed. Kvery gift seems laden not only with tloth or paper or metal as the case might be, but all seemed to carry a real message of sympathy and hope, many of the packages are tied with ' fancy Christmas ribbons or gold cords and bear tags and ChriBtmas cards Just as the . Christmas packages do that we exchange with our friends. I wonder how many of us. realize the value of the lesson in thinking of others rather than ourselves, as taught in the sermon of the Christ - mas Ship. State highway projects in Jackson, Columbia, Clat sop, Multnomah. Hood River and Sher man counties are being rounded into chape for the winter, according to State Highway Engineer Bowlby. Work will all cease November 1 on the roads. The state highway engineer; stated today that the roads which had j not been completed were being graded 1 ; up for winter, so that they would be .In passable condition and would be in good shape in the spring, after sct ' tltng for several months. In Jackson county, 16 miles of pav ing has been completed on the Pacific highway, and 27 miles of grading done. .
