4 ' - t .r: ." t . THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, MONDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 19, 1914. 13 FOOD SUPPLIES FOR ANTWERP SOUGHT Consul .Sherman Arrives at London From Captured City to Make Plans. LURID STORIES ARE DENIED Account of Bombardment Bald to Have Been Witnessed hy Correspondents Described rictlon. London, Oct. 13. United States Vice Consul H. T. Sherman arrived from Antwerp, today under instruc tions from the state department to arrange with Ambassador Page for Burriclent funds to buy food supplies for Americans at Antwerp during the German occupation. Mr. Sherman declined to discuss the capture of Antwerp, except to say that the staffs of all the legations left the city Tuesday morning to seek safety in Holland. The consular staffs, in cluding himself, die not leave until the following noon, 12 hours before the tiombardment began. All returned Friday, after the surrender of tht city. J. U. Oasller. an official of the Bell Telephone company in Antwerp, who accompanied Air. Sherman to London, said: '"Lurid accounts of the bombard ment alleged to have been witnessed by certain correspondents are pure fiction, as they all fled to Holland with the legations Tuesday morning, and saw nothing. What facts they did get hold of were obtained from refu gees and others after it was all over. On Story Hailed. "This particularly applies to a cor- respondent wno in a aispatcn to a cer - tain newspaper stated that finding: Mr. Hherman had fled from town and left the American consulate deserted, he had taken charge during the bom bardment and rendered aid to the Americans left behind. "This, on the face of It, is absurd, because nobody was abroad during the bombardment. Everybody was hidden in cellars and other places of safety. Besides, I saw this correspondent leuve the town with the legations, 43 hours before tho first Ehell came into Antwerp, Wednesday midnight, and I know he" did not return until Friday afternoon, when it was all over. As for the account of the terror and havoc wrought by the fleet of six Zeppelins during the bombardment not an airship was seen anywhere near Antwerp during all the terrible time, and only one Taube monoplane. Even this dropped no bombs, acting merely an a scout to show the range to the Germans' big guns. City Hot Badly Damaged. "The city is not nearly so badly damaged by the bombardment as re ported.' Not more than 150 houses at1 told were struck .or burned, and the cathedral was not even scratched. Chandler Hale, who has charge of Austrian affairs in London for the American embassy, is astonished by the British government's humani tarian treatment of prisoners of war. Mr. Hale has Just paid a visit of in spection to the prisoners' compounds at Aldershot. and Queen's Ferry, North Wales. In each, case he found civilian- and soldier prisoners provid ed with the same food and comforts as British troops. At the Hague con vention next month Hale intends vis iting the detention camps of Austria and Germany to see how the pris oners are treated. - State of Virginia Will Sue Morgan Would Compel Financiers to Restore to Archives Will of Kit, Martha Washington, Which was stolen. Richmond, Va, Oct. 19. The state of Virginia will sue J. P. Morgan to compel him to restore, to the archives of the commonwealth the will of Mrs. Martha Washington. This was an nounced today by J. C. Pollard, at torney general of Virginia, who said Governor Htuart had instructed him to bring the action in the federal courts. The suit was 'decided upon only after all attempts to get Mr. Morgan to restore the will had failed. The document was stolen from the public records of Fairfax county while rairfax court bouse was occupied by Unidn soldiers during the Civil war. Sanctified Sea Fishery. VYom the New York Mail. It will soon be possible to buy sar dines from the Sea of Galilee. A com pany has been formed to establish i plant for the capture and canning of the succulent little fishes at the vil lag of Tiberias. The "Sea of Galilee," or Oennesoret, or Chinnereth, or Tiberias, is a fresh water lake, 13 miles long and eight miles in breadth at Its widest part. Tiberias, which is now a place of 3000 lnhabtants, most of whom are very poor, was an important city in the time of Christ, but It was then regarded as unclean by the Jews, because It was built over ancient tombs. One of the interesting places on the lake is Mag dala, which gives its name to Mary Magdalen. The miracle of the fishes was performed on this lake, but It is believed that Jesus never entered the city of Tiberias because of Its unholy associations. In Capernaum, however, which is quite near, he dwelt after he left Nazareth, and there he began his preaching; It was called "his own city." Capernaum is gone now, and the place where It stood Is known only as "the little hollow," while wicked Tiberias still stands. As Simon Peter and his brother An drew, and James and John, the sons of Zebcdee, were all fishermen of this lake, the privilege of eating sardines which are taken from its waters will no doubt be appreciated by all godly people. Towing Locomotives for the Canal. From the Electric Railway Journal. The first electric towing locomotives for hauling vessels through the locks of the Panama canal are now being re ceived at tne istnmus. in all 40 "eJec trie mules" will be built. Four of them, two on each side, will ordinarily prop'cl steamships through the locks. Sometimes six engines will be needed to handle extra large vessels; in every .case two astern, acting as a brake on the ship s movements, will give direc tion to her course. No vessel will be allowed to enter the locks and go through on her own power. The loco motive Is propelled by means of a rack rail while towing and while going up or down the steep grades from one level to another at a speed of two miles per hour. While running idle or on return tracks, the speed is changed to AMERICANS NOW IN flv miles per hour and the machine is propelled by the regular traction meth od, the rack pinion being entirely released.
