TJy William Philip Sims. Pari. Oct. 1. (By Mallto New York) I am 3uBt back from the front, where the fighting is actually going on from the battle fields where French and Hrlttsh and German fioldlers have add ed new pages to history. Rut It was not the actual front which Impressed me most the bloody front, where rapid flrers purt-ed and Lebels Hat and shrapnel HplHed its singing sprays of death. It was rather the fighting's wake, where women and chil dren and crippled Old men sat and blinked and stared dazedly, benumbed. Incapable as yet of appreciating the fullness of the catastrophe which had Juat passed over them. OimiriR out of Solssons. I met a car avan of wounded, walking toward Cha teau Thierry and Meaux. There were men of all amis of the service, and all the figlitinK r.sces men from Algeria, Tunis and Senegal, Moroccans, French, Hrltish and Hindus all with the first blood-crusted bandages applied to arms, heads, or Irgs. hobbling slowly down the muddy road in the cold, soak ing drizzle. Refugee! Return Home. They were the only slightly wound ). M; to 'iuit the firing line on their riBTi!s. And they were pitiful. Hut south of Meaux, bound north ward to the plains of the Marne, I passt-d another caravan more pitiful ftill. It was a caravan of old men, women, girls, ihildren and babies, returning homo after being driven beyong faria I wa r ' ne toniiin I saw was barefooted. 'She had trudge! her shoes from her feet. It was raining, and the roads were deep in mud, because for weeks .artillery, auto trucks, army trains and convoys of n-rmy supplies, plus the wheels (Jf various other war machines, had cut into them deeply. This woman was pushing a baby carriage, in wh;ch were two children and some household effects. Her skirts dragged the mud as she leaned forward, and she was be spattered to the waist. Bareheaded, tjnder the drizzle she struggled on, a feverish light in her eyes and twin spots glowing on her cheeks.. A soaked brownish cape failed to keep the wet from penetrating to her skin.' Calls War "Olortooa." I spoke to her, and learned that her husband "was in the east, somewhere I on the firing line. She had not heard! from him. Yes, she was very uneasy. Suddenly, I asked her what she thought of the war. "It's glorious, isn't It?" she answered In her "bampagne country dialect. J "We are pushing the Germans back out I of our country. If ours continue to1 fight-as they are fighting now, we shall win soon. Don't ou think so with the Knglish'to help?'' ' This caravan was only one of many. They f,.l from their villages and farms as the Germans advanced, whole .hamlets and neighborhoods going to gether. Their horses and good vehicles were often seized, leaving only old. unfit animals to drag the two-wheeled carts and squeaking wagns filled with hay ami women and babies, indiscriminate ly mixed. At night they camped by the road sides, whether it rained or the stars rame out. The only food they had was what they started with on their Jour ney. They were without meat, and their bread was stale and soggy. They slept in their clothes, those who could, under cur id or wagons, to keep off a little of tie downpour. Women Are Seal Sufferer. These are the real sufferers from the war. They left farms which looked like great gardens; fruit trees laden with ripe fruit; fields of wheat ready for the harvest; yards fat with cattle and sheep and swine and chickens. They return to battle fields. Stone fences have been Overthrown by artillery; wheat is trampled and ruined; thousands of graves dot the fields, horses, dead and swollen to twice their natural size, lie here and there; fruit trees are cut by shells; perhaps the homes themselves are only Btnoking ruins. J he cattle and sheep, the chickens and the swine, are gone to ted the soldiers friends and enemie" alike, for these fields were fought ovei twice by the most formidable forces of any time. And all the time the soldiers, wheth er they willed it or not, were treading upon the aged und the weak, the wom en and the young. Fields Are Unworked. Of the two caravans that of the wounded soldiers on their way to the rear, and of the poor farm people home ward bound the destiny of non-combatants is to be the harder. In a distance of 70 miles I saw but three people working in the fields. It is not 'the war that depressed; the sound of battle stimulates like wine. But in the track of the war, where the old are, and the women and children wait, there is real suffering. The effect of merely passing through the country is racking. The sight of de serted fields, broken fences, l'elled trees, trampled crops, shell-torn or burned houses, scarred villages, the ut ter desolation which stalks about, the tragic silences following the roar of the cannon, all force the question, "After all, wKo really wins?" Apparently the answer would be: "Death!" Silk and its manufactures comprise nearly 40 per cent of the exports of Japan. Removes Hairy Growths Without Pain or Bother (Modes of Today) j It is not necessary to use a pain- ! ful process to remove hairy growths, for with a little delatone handy you can keep the skin entirely free from these beauty destroyers. To remove hair, make a stiff paste with a little jowdered delatone and water. Sprea.1 ' this on the hairy surface and in about i 2 minutes rur off, wash the skin and '' the hairs are gone.
