MAN LEAVES, WIFE tilES
Bereaved Husband Consigns Body to
mends Bodies float Sown the
Danube In Great If umbers.
A dramatic episode of the war In
Europe Is recounted by I. Ostrovsky.
a representative of the J. I. Case
Threshing Machine company In Vedin,
Bulgaria, writing to a friend In Port
land. The following Is taken from
the- letter:
"The scene is Russia. The mobiliza
tion is in progress. It is one minute
before a steamer Is to leave port
crowded with reservists. It -Is the
moment of farewell. A wife clings to
her husband's Bhoulders. The third
bell, announcing the Immediate depar
ture of the vessel, clangs. Its coarse
nqte like a steel knife fends a shud
der do'vi n the grief stricken woman's '
frame. There la a shudder. The wife
lies dead in her husband's arms. Heart
failure. The husband pushes the still
warm body away from him. 'Take
her away,' be sliouts to the crowd.
'Bury her and take care of my chil
dren. I am going to fight for my
Father, the Czar and Mother Russia!'
And with these words he Jumps to the
deck of the steamer as she leaves the
dock."
Vedin, Bulgaria, from wbere the
letter Is written, Is on the Danube,
not far down the river from Servla.
Mr. Ostrovsky writes that the horror
of war is everywhere In evidence In
that city, as the river Is full of float
ing corpses of Austrian and Servian
troopers who iiave been killed in ac
tion farther up the stream. They
float down , to Vedin, whole bodies,
headless bodies, here and there a
ghastly head alone, or an arm or a
leg, to bo fished out of the river by
the Bulgarians
