A news agency dispatch to London from Belgiu'm Hald 32 German mer chant vessels, including many steam ships, had been blown up at Antwerp. Eastern. William J. Bryan, secretary of State. accompanied by nearly a hundred Democratic leaders of In diana, began a two-day speaking campaign in that state. Fire destroyed Columbia unlver- PULLETS SHOULD BE LAYING RIGHT The early spring pullets soon will be laying, provided they have good quar ters and the right kind of feed. You Cannot hope to get many eggs if you allow them to run in yards that are bare of green stuff and only feed them a grain diet. Grain will make flesh, but when it comes to eggs there is nothing that will' do so well as plenty of green stuff. A good mash set be fore the pullets at this season of the year will aid: the pullets in making ggs.' The following mash will bring good results. Two hundred pounds of al falfa meitl. 200 pounds of bran. 100 pounds of short. 100 pounds of coarse corn meal, 50 pounds of meat scraps 25" pound" of oil meal,, two pounds of . salt and five pounds of charcoal. 'Mix thoroughly and feed dry. In feeding Use hoppfjrs and keep the mash before the pullets at all times. ' For a grain food you can get a good scratch ready mixed, but equal parts ef oats, cracked corn and wheat makes a good mixed feed. Sunflower seed are '.relished by the fowls and will help to make feathers if you have, moulting , hens. The feed above is good for old hens, but one should be careful not to get them too fftt. There is very little danger of getting the pullets too fat. Good quarters consist of plenty of Scratching room where the litter can be kept dry. A good place to roost that Is free from draughts and where the fowl, will have plenty of room and not be crowded. Wotbing Better Than Kale. For green food there is nothing bet ter, than kale where one can get it. ' Two thousand head variety is about the best, as it is a great producer and will grow all winter. Cabbage is good. but the dry season this year has made all kinds of green stuff scarce and cabbage will cost morn this season than in past years. Little potatoes boiled and mixed with a mash will aid the pullets; but do not feed them potatoes more than once a week, as they are very fattening. Have plenty of fresh water before .the fowls at all times. Do not feed any kind oftirnulatinff foods. Do not dose the fdwls with anything except good food. Bee that the houses are free of lice. Spray everywhere with some good liquid lice killer. Clean out the old litter and put in fresh straw. Oat straw makes about the best litter in which to feed the grain. Cover the floors of the houses with about two . Inches of sand and then put in about : six Inches of oat straw. Feed all of the grain in this litter and the fowls ' will get plenty of exercise. In feeding, green food, take a piece Of chicken rwlre, two-Inch mesh, and nail this to the side of the house. , making a wall pocket Put all of the green food i in this and the hens will : eat everything up without any waste. . Mike your hoppers on the side of ths wall.. Have them high enough so "that the hens can get at them easily and not scratch the litter into them - Have tops over the hoppers so that , the hens cannot roost on them and get their droppings in the mash. If you will do your part the early pullets will take advantage of the high prices and pay enough in eggs to reward you. The price of eggs Is on the up grade and will go as high this season as last . year. There are more eggs in storage this season than there were last, but the demand for fresh eggs will be as large this season n ever before. Eggs Will reach their highest price Just about Thanksgiving time. Try and b leady fgr; the best market. ; S' POULTRY NOW slty's gymnasium, registration office I and the editorial rooms of the "Col umbia Spectator," says New York re port. . Messages from Galena, Kins , and Miami and Hattenville, Oklahoma, said a tornado had struck all three towns, killing four persons, injuring five and doing much property damase. Executive. Newspaper publishers object to plan of levying tax on bundles under sys tem of house war revenue bllL Publishers contend that neither the railroads nor other transportation companies will hold their cars until newspaper packages are checked, stamped and receipted for. Contest on the conference report on the Alaska coal land leasing bill took up the time, the senate resulting in delaying debate on the war revenue bill. Senators Borah and Lane ob jected to provision of coal land re port compelling the secretary of in terior to bring suit for forfeiture to interfere with leases. Opponents of coal land measure al lege it would make government" .powerless to regulate properly de velopment of lands to be leased. President Wilson says reports in dicate business conditions are grow ing better. This fact will be dwelt upon by Democratic speakers in the fall campaign. Many orders for American goods have bepn received from abroad and first bad effect of war is past Forming part of Democratic cam paign material will likely be state ment from the president after sign ing of Clayton anti-trust bill, calling attention to completion of trust leg islation of the administration, President WMnn HrHd tn .ooont invitation to speak in Pittsburg Oct. 24 on the 17th anniversary of the founding of the Young Men's Chris tian association. S PLEASURE AND POULTRY A profit of $32.33 on an investment of $110.98 for eight months was made by E. Vernon Rains, a member of the Boys Industrial club who Engaged in the poultry contest conducted by the Oretron Agricultural college and the state school superintendent.' This if! a 30 per cent gain, and sine the peri- j od of actual investment hardly aver- ! aged six months, the actual rate of proftt was about 60 per cent. And in addition to the money gain the flock i has been transformed, from mongrel to pure breds, and the contestant has : a valuable stock of industrial and busl- i ness experience that will stand him in Kooa Pieaa ior me remainder of his natural life. During the eight months of con test, from January 1 to .September 1. the average size of Vernon's flock of layers was 40 hens. From this flock he secured 4021 eggs, an average of 100 eggs for each hen. This was an average of but 12.6 eggs per hen for each month of the contest i ne cuss were soia mostly to the neignnors and to his own parents, a few going to the local market. Only a few were sold as high as 40 eents a dozen, and some were sold at 15 cents per dozen. Feed was all bought except the green feed, and the pre vailing market price was paid. Ver non says that hens must have green feed to keep them in health and vig or, and that they must have meat if they are expected to lay. Chickens were hatched by incubator and by hens, the latter proving the most satisfactory. From 305 incu bator eggs 213 chickens were hatched, and from 288 eggs set under hens 221 cmcKens were naicnea. Vernon set two hens at the same time when pos sible, and gave all the chicks to one. resetting the other. That he made mistakes, he admits, in his report The worst mistake was feeding young chicks wet mash to the extent that they would not eat grains. They grew so slowly that at 4 months of age they weighed but a pound each. On his report Vernon was graded 100 per cent He has yet to make an exhibit of two pullets and one cock erel at a fair, where it will be scored by local Judges. This score will be added to his 100 report score and av erage made for his final grade. Val uable prizes go to the winner, so that his profits may be still further in creased. But he Is entirely satisfied with his experience, and says that for a small amount of trouble he receive! great pleasure and: fair compensation. and that the contest brought him Into contact with the real world. Trap Nests.. ' Some men have said thev could not bother to use trap nests, that it took too mueri time Then Vio - . v. " - - 1 1 them, hence do not know how little ex- tra time it takes and they do not. stop to consider that they are los'ns more in the food consumed by the non layers than they would put into time spent on the trap-nest records.
