In Full Blast-Inaugurating 100 REMARKABLE Sales!
- Owing to the extraordinary magnitude, the great importance and the remarkable economies of this sale, it will be impossible to advertise in detail each and every
sale. We shall confine ourselves to the simple description of the merchandise offered in the limited space at our disposal. The economies in Tuesday's sale are so
pronounced that we urge shopping in the morning. While in many instances the quantities are large, we doubt, at the sale prices, if the assortments will last through
out the day. Every section of the store comes forward with high-grade and thoroughly dependable merchandise at most unusual and decidedly drastic price reductions.

THREE WASHINGTON
, BANKS FAIL TO OPEN
TODAY FOR BUSINESS
(Continued. From Page One.)
Hons assert that they will turn over
all of their private property, and that
depositors will be paid In lull.
The other two banks were prepared
to stand the run this morning, but
there was little demand for money on
deposit at either Institution.
George Dysart, stockholder of the
United States National, attributes the
failure to the European war, dullness
of the lumber market, and the fact
that other banks called in paper held
on the local Institution.
The United States National bank
was organised in 1807 by taking over
the old State Bank of Centralia. The
old bank was organized In 1895, with
deposits of $30,000, and in 1907 they
had grown to $800,000.
The Union Loan & Trust company
was organised in 1908. It is believed
that this institution is not so heavily
involved.
City Was Depositor.
Officers of the United States Na
tional are Charles Gilchrist, president;
C 8. Gilchrist, vice president and man
ager; J. W. Daubney. cashier, and R.
W. Daubney, assistant cashier. Stock
holders are the- two GUchrists, F. B.
Hubbard. F. T. JdcNUt, George Dysart.
P. R. Hiatal, J. W. Daubney, D. F.
Davles, Herman Young and Dan Salzer.
The heaviest depositor in the banks
was the city of Centralia, which had
tSO.000 on deposit. The closing of the
institution leaves the municipality
with but $10,000 cash on hand from
its spring tax receipts.
Raymond Bank Firm.
Raymond, Wash., .Sept. 21. The
dosing of the two Centralia banks
this morning In no wise affected the
two banks of this city. Charles Gil
chrlst. president of United States Na
tienal. Centralia, was until three
months ago president of the Wlllapa
Harbor State bank of this city, but
disposed of his entire Interest In the
local bank so that he Is not now con
nected with it in any capacity. There
has been no stir over the news of the
Centralia failures and no withdrawal
of deposits have been made or are ex
pected.

the prison report for the 1911-12 bien
nial period. No statement has ever
been made: by me to the contrary, not
withstanding the Oregonlan's charges.
"The Oregonian, when it is not fol
lowing Us policy of deliberately lying.
usually suppresses facts, which would
show the truth. It failed to disclose
the fact that the said brick were off
set by sales and gifts as follows:
Sold O. A. C. 774,100 at $5, $3770.50
old insane asylum, 133,090 at $6,

free to tuberculosis sanitarium. 100.'

19,050; free to mute school, 58,954
free to blind school, 100. Totals. 1,

"The Oregonian suppressed the fact
that after purchasing a valuable tract
of land out of the brickyard fund.
Installing a number of needed indus
tries to absorb the labor of the Insti
tution and making a large number of
needed Improvements, over $4600 was
turned Into the state treasury.
Other Facts Suppressed.
"The Oregonian suppressed the fact
that the Institutions have been run
without deficiencies as in the past,
and It suppressed the factthat nearly
$28,000 of our appropriations will be
turned back Into the general fund
unused.?
The Oregonian also suppressed the
fact that the penitentiary will carry
over January 1, In the revolving fund,
about $14,000 In cash and stock.
"It also suppressed the fact that
labor had been furnished public insti
tutions which if figured at only $1.50
per day would amount to over $78,000
or nearly double what the old stove
foundry contract would produce.
"It wtll be my purpose to discuss
not only these things at the Armory
- meeting but the general questions of
the day, such as law enforcement and
good government, the employed ques
tion, and the- charge that the Ore
