N IrvU Higglnbotham, veteran Tiger
- tamer; wi In fine form yesterday and
the Haps gathered but three hit oft
the' biff bird, whose fast5 ball and sharp
curves bad then) swinging their heads
off. Hig could make the little white
. pellet do what he wanted and the only
man who walked was Carlisle., and he
got away in the ninth inning with one
out. but was bagged In a double play
started by Hlg himself on Hosp's
grounder. Klepfer aUo pitched good
ball, but the champions played the
' national pasjHm as it should . be
played and he had no chance to win.
Only one Gondolier paddled to first
base and Bayless- was the only one of
Hap's explorers i who ventured beyond
that point, on his double to left in the
seventh with one out. but he got
caught In a double play, whan Litsehi
filed to Lober and that worthy winged
to Bancroft beforo Dicky could get
back.: .
Some clever base running by BUI
Rodgers fooled the Tigers in the first
Inning with two out. Incidentally Bill
increased his base. running record with
two pilfers on Jack Bllgs.
Rodgers walked In the opener and
-, stole second. Doane rolled a slow one
down the third base line that Klepfer
hounded and beat It out. Klepfer'
throw to Borton was wide, and while
that worthy was stretching himself,
Rodgers outguessed the enemy by
crossing the plate. Doane stole sec
ond and .took third on Bliss' bad heave,
but Held called a third strike that
evoked indignation from Buddy and
the Beavers laid off .till the fifth
... frame. ..
Two men Were also down in thi
frame when Hlgglnbotham shot a long
one between Kane and Bayless for two
cushions. Hig didn't do much fretting
:. around the keystone, for Bancroft
touted one down tho first base line
that was good. for two bases and Hig
loped home., Derrick lofted to Kane
and that was the last good chance the
.locals had to taily4 although Rodgers
doubled to left with two but in the
eighth. . -
Hogan sent Molly Meloan up to bat
'for Klepfer in the ninth, but Molly
wnuno. inen .Carlisle walked as
aforementioned and Hosn hit into a
double play, Hig to Bancroft to Der
rick..-
5 Buddy Ryan contributed : two senna
i . tlonal catches of files by Kane, the
' I first to the left of him and the second
V t to- the right of i him. - Bancroft also
. broke : into the limelight "with some
sparkling fielding. . . ..'
The series now stands' two games to
one for the Beavers and they are back

"It must be true that a man has to
go away from home to get .the news,'
observes Bozeman Bulger, "for It de
veloped that not an English delegate
to the athletic meeting la Paris re
cently knew that baseball -was played
in Great Britain until Jim Sullivan
told . them about It, Tea. and we'll
have to string along with the Britons
-we didn't know it, either."
Advices from London say that
Willie Ritchie expects to find Freddie
Welsh as easy to beat as Mexican Joe
Rivers.
"These really clever boxers never
held any terrors for me." said the
champion. "They canont ; hit hard
enough- to break an eggshell and I
have never yet seen a man so clever
but 'what I could reach him. I hit
Welsh a good mapy times in our fight
in Los Angeles. I am 'stronger and
faster, now than I was 'then. And
what's more. I only need to plant one
right cross to the Briton's Jawvto win.
ly friends at home need not worry.
as Freddie Welsh will not relieve me
of the title."
Gunboat Smith Is said to making a
great hit with the London. fight fans.
The gunner says he likes the Lon
doners, too.
"They certainty do know how to
treat a fighter over'here," says Smith.
"A . day never passes but what I am
invited by some lord, duke or earl to
sip a cup' of tea with him. I would
bo mighty glad to accept such Invita
tions, too, but I never could drink tea,
and besides, it would be hard" for me
to get a strangle hold on one of the
dainty little cups they use over here.
My hands and fingers weT not made

San Francisco. Cal.r July t, Every
Indication today pointed to ' Georga
Chip of Newcastle, pa., entering the :
ring at Daly City tomorrow afternoon
a 10 to C favorite when he faces Billr
Murray of Sacramento in their ached-.
uled to round bout. -Earlv today odd's .
of 10 to- H were quoted, and there
was little Murray money In sight.
Murray's poor gymnanlum" showing,
coupled with Chip's knockout of Sailor
Petroakey, -are two reasons advanced,
for the easterner being made such a
pronounced favorite. Persistent re
ports that Murray has been held back
in his public workouts and that be haa
been .keeping late hours were denied .
by Manager Jack Kearns. J
Murray rested all day yesterday. A a
a result he put on a pound, and Kearns
said this would let him in nicely at
158 pounds; the stipulated weight-'Chlp
continued busy in the gymnasium for
a full workoat. , He shadow boxed
two rounds, then tugged with the big
bag and wound up with four rounds
against Tom McMahon. At the close of
this work Chip weighed 168 pounds.
