Stratford Players Bring Out the
Wit and Humor of Shakespeare.
Performance Ugnly pleasing.
If Queen ..lzabeth was as delighted
as the Heillg, audience last evening.
When the Stratford-upon-Avon players
gave- "The Merry Wives of Windsor,"
Shakespeare must have felt well sat
isfied with his work.' Tradition has
it, with many .Indications of truth,
that good Queen Bess commanded the
poet to write her a play in which
Falstaff should be in love, and to do
it la fourteen days. "The Merry
Wives of Windsor" is the result.
Lacking all court scenes and the
pomp of so many Of bnakespeare's
plays. It deals with commonplace peo
ple and is one of the poet's few cre
ations giving a truthful picture of
contemporaneous middle class lifo.
If there were any who went to the
theatre last evening harboring the idea
that Shakespeare has been outlived
and his plays are not wanted in this
day, they must have lost the idea
before the performance was well over
for the modern comedy or the concoc
tion of mirth and melody that can
surpass "The Merry Wives of Wind
sor" in lauguter producing quality
would be Indeed hard to find.
The rascal Falstaff is In love, but
not honestly so, yet his conceit and
self satisfaction are so great that he
is the willing dupe of the two merry
wives and blindly falls into the pit
which he dug. That is the big theme
of the play wnich is notable for its
plot rather than for cuaracter draw
ing. It Is written in prose with only
a bit of blank verse and imagery at
the close when the fairy scene is in
troduced. It is the ideal of the Stratford-ripon-Avon
players to show that
Shakespeare is not dull and unin
teresting, but full of iun, .tumor, wit
and understanding of human nature.
To them is the lion's share of the
credit for the performance last night.
By elimination of the "star" sys
tem and schooling of the actors to
the Idea that "the play's the tning"
amazing results are attained. A cast
of artists of equal strength, with not
a flaw to be picked from the small
est to the largest part, works With
a harmony and oneness . o purpose.
creating an atmosphere of. real life.
not play acting, that reaches out at
once Into the audience which responds
with an understanding and goodfel
lowshlp too seldom engendered In the
theatre.
The scenery is not elaborate bul
adequate and there are no waits after
the curtain rises at 8:15. The detail
of the costuming and make up lsJ
most worthy of note. William Cal
vert is the Falstaff. Dr. Calus, the
French physician, is played by F.
R. Benson, who has been directer of
art at the Shakespeare Memorial thea
tre for 25 years. A member from
whom much may be expected In other
roles Is Murray Carrington, who
played the Jealous Ford. The two
scenes that fairly rocked the house
with laughter were the duel episode
and Falstaff's first adventure when
he is carried off in the basket '"The
Merry wives of Windsor" will be re
peated Thursday "King Richard the
Second" is the play for tonight,
