THE BUSINESS OUTLOOK
By Hyman
Latest advices are to tlie effect that
an experimental starch factory will be
constructed near Vancouver by farm
ers of that section to take care of the
surplus potatoes.
Jbivery year, no matter how good is
the market for good potatoes, thera
are heavy stocks that go to waste on
the farms for various reasons. Some
of this stock is too small for the reg
ular table trade, and others are ili
shaped. Every bit of this stock can
be utilized by the makers of starch,
and the proposed factory across the
Columbia may solve the probiem th.vt
Iian long confronted producers of this
section.
Not only can starch' be made from
thia surplus product, but the promot
ers, of the enterprise allege that pota
toes make the best glucose, and they
propose to establish a plant for the
latter product within a short time.
It is stated that glucose manufac
tured from notatoes is of superior
quality, and will bring more money

Oregon Eadishes Go
to Eastern Markets
Shipments From Portland Rather
Libera and Quality Is the
Best Known.
For years this section of the coun
try has paid tribute to California veg
etable growers, but the yoke has at
latst been thrown off and not only are
local producers supplying most of the
needs of the northweBt trade through
out the year, but they are actually
shipping in liberal lots to the east.
Oregon radishes are now going for
ward in large lots to Minnesota, Da
kota and Montana. Shipments are be
ing made in barrels ' with ice In the
center to keep the supplies fresh in
transit. Tlie excellent quality of the
local offerings is sure to force a large
trade regularly in this direction.
Oregon rhubarb is being shipped to
California in large supplies, and not
withstanding the strong native son
sentiment in the southern state, the
Oregon growth Is taking the lead in
the trade.
Spinach from The Dalles is row cap
turing the trade wherever presented,
owing to the excellence of its quality.
A big outside trade in spinach is ex
pected to follow its Introduction.
Lehigh Valley and
Mo. Pacific Are Hit
New York, April 17. Lehigh Valley
and Missouri Pacific shares were
beaten down today under tremendous
selling pressure. In the case of the
Lehigh Valley It was generally con
ceded that a reduction would be made
in the dividend. New financing that
must be met by Missouri Pacific put
that security on the slide today. Le
hiKh Valley opened at 141 or point
al-ove the previous closing and at the
end of the session was around 135. Mis
souri Pacific opened at 244, an ad
vance of i point and sold down to
18 at the closing. Reading lost 1
point during the day but most other
shares showed fractional changes.

than regular offerings. So far as
known, there are no potato glucose
factories in the United States, there
fore the experiment to be made at Van
couver Is likely to be watched by pro
ducers throughout tiie country.
By-product factories are now the
watchword throughout the Pacific
northwest. Fruit growers are fast
discovering that a very large per cent
of their product each season does not
reach the market at all. They are agi
tating tlie establishment of various
plants to take care of the surplus
fruits and Vegetables.
Farmers', cooperative canneries ara
making a success at various points.
This season, for the first time, Oregon
canned fruits and vegetables made
their appearance on the European ma r
Hets in fair supply. The experiment
has proven a success, and with th-s
widening of the market the outlook Is
much more hopeful for the cooperative
plants now being established at vari
ous points in the northwest.
Hop Contracts Are
Strong at 15 Cents
Local Market Shows No Change in
Situation; Good Growers
Not Offrings.
Market for hop contracts shows prac
tically no change for recent days.
Fifteen cents Is still being offered, for
contracts on the coming crop both In
Oregon and in California. Little busi
ness is passing. Some of the growers
who annually produce poor quality are
letting go, but those that turn out the
best grade are generally holding- back.
Trade in spot hops continues ex
tremely quiet. Business conditions in
the east are still unsatisfactory, and
this is holding back the trade in spot
offerings. While no sales have been
made recently, leading dealers assert
that occasional orders are available at
17c to 17 c for best quality. Only
1 nominal supply of this grade Is
available, most of the holdings con
sisting of poor to ordinary goods. '
A late New York mail advice says
of the situation:

"Our local market has continued very
dull and weak. Brewers have com
plained of poorer business than usual
and they have bought so sparingly that
dealers have competed sharply for the

some cases prices have been cut, and
our Quotations are now extreme to sell.

Extreme auiet is showing in the lo
cal grain trade. The entire market is
permeated with dullness and there is
no snap to the buying In any sturr.
While the market cannot be said to
be really weak, with the withdrawal
of the millers from the buying tempo
rarily, there has generally been a loss
of lc a bushel In the prices being of
fered for wheat In the country. These
prices are unsatisfactory to country
noiders and there is nothing offering.
Dut business is so slow in general that
bidders are not Inclined to force values
up again.
Millers purchased Quite liberal
stocks a few weeks ago and they are
content to allow this to bo cleaned up
before again entering the market ex
cept perhaps at lower prices.
Oats market is weaker here than
elsewhere. In the interior values are
higher than at Portland because of the
several additional outlets. So much
Willamette valley stock is beinsr of
re red that the home trade is swamped.
Barley market continues to show
neglect and while occasional small lots
are reported taken as high as $22 for
No. 1 feed and $23.60 for brewing, the
general trade is bidding a half dollar
less than these figures.

Portland hog market prices reached
the highest mark In the entire country

This was an advance of a nickel above
the nrevlous extreme Dries and was
the only market t show a further rise
in values during the morning.
There was a fair run of swine In the

Only one load of cattle came forward
to the North Portland market over

mixed with extreme quality of light

bidders after price concessions.
The small arrivals recently are ex
