last year's movement still in the minds
of trade here, as- well as in the in
terior, and with a greater volume of
advertising to acquaint outside buyers
with the tacts of Portland's suprem
acy, there is no doubt that the number
of business will be fully double that
of a-year ago.
Outside buyers will be shown in
concrete form that they can purchase
their requirements cheaper and with
less delay at Portland than in any
other market on the Pacific coast.

tracting has assumed new life in the
west, with the highest prices of the

Prices are strong here for both foreign I change

the mills are active.
Attention is drawn to the abnormal
conditions both here and abroad, partic
ularly the parallel that can be drawn
between the tariff situation, regarding
wool and the paradox noted when the
duty was removed from hides. Hardly
had the removal taken place when
prices of hides and leather were ad
vanced and since have been held high.
The past four months have shown a
similar experience in the wool trade.

Florence, Or April . 4. The barge
Frederick, in tow of the tug Roscoe,
went on the rocks at the end of -the
north Jetty last night and will likely
be a total loss. Loaded with ma-
' chinery for Porter Brothers, the vessel
was being towed In about 6 o clock,
last night. The Roscoe lost control
of the barge ln a stiff southeasterly
wind and the Frederick Jammed agalns
the end of the north jetty, damaging
both the barge and the - Jetty consla
erably. ?
Thirty-five bents were torn from the
jetty. The bottom of the Frederick
was knocked full of holes and she
took water rapidly settling on to the
rocks. Today every attempt is being
made to save some of the machinery..
aboard her and probably some of it wll
be saved. She carried 800 tons of rail
way equipment, including a steam
shovel, a locomotive and several dump
cars, besides a lot of tools and general
equipment for Porter Brothers.
The Frederick has been pursued by
hard luck. Only last week she "came

steamer Tiverton. Captain Green,? re
turned from Puget 8ound yesterday,

The fog lifted at the mouth of tho
river this morning, enabling the Brit
ish steamers Cardiganshire and Crown
of Toledo to sail at 8 a. m. Both
steamers go to Puget Bound to com
plete their cargoes.
To take -on flour for use at the can-
neries : in Alaska this summer . the
American ship Levi Burgess moved
from Llnnton to Albina dock today.
The Ocklahama is bound up the riv
er today with tbe two German barks.
Barmbek and Tarpenbek, on her haw-
sera The Barmbek is coming to M. H
Houser for grain and the Tarpenbek to
Comynn, Mackall & Co. for lumber.
Both will discharge ballast at the Linn-
ton ballast dock before coming to
Portland. . - .
The gas schooner Delia reached
Portland late last night from Nestucca
while the gas schooner Jack Burnham
is to sail for Oregon coast ports tonight.
The steamer San Ramon, Captain
Jamleson, which was to have sailed for
San Francisco with passengers and
lumber, today, will not get away till
Monday. She carries 400,000 feet of
lumber for San Francjsco.

day's session f the United Evangel
ical conference was - devoted to a
heated discussion in executive session
of the 'recommendation of the Joint
commission to federate ' the Vnltad
Rvapgellcal, the United Brethren and
the Evangelical associations' educa
tional interests. The matter was final
ly left in the lianda of the educational
committee headed by President Winter
of Dallas college.
The temperance committee's report
was adopted, setting aside August ,
as pledge signing day and November
8 as antl-cfgarette day. Resolutions
declaring for prohibition of the liquor
traffic and the white slave traffic and
the elevation of. public amusements
were passed. A recommendation to
Increase the number of church stew
ards was lost. One to extend the
terms of pastors to five years carried.

River Steamer to Go to San Fran
Cisco When Weather Permits.
With the first indications of several
days of fair weather the river steamer
Monarch, formerly owned by Captain
E. W. SrJencer, but which is to go into
service out of San Francisco, will leave
Astoria in tow of the tug Printer from
Grays Harbor. The Monarch will
leave here tomorrow morning for As
toria. Captain Hasklns and a crew
of eight men will be on board the Mon
arch. They have completed tneir prep
arations for her departure, having tak-
en off the wheel and braced her
throughout with strong timbers. Her
housings have been barred up and it la
thought she will encounter no trouble
ln reaching San Francisco.
ITALIAN CRUISER IS COMING
Calabria to Pay Portland j Visit

Harbormaster Jacob Speier received
word yesterday that the Italian cruiser
Calabria will visit Portland this sum
mer. The Calabria ia one of the most
modern cruisers in the Italian navy
and her coming will likely result in s
general round of entertainments for
her officers. The date of her arrival
here has not been determined as yet,
but word is expected soon, giving her
entire itinerary.
