Chicken are in good demand on
Front street with few coming in, due
no doubt to the fact that the hens are
beginning to lay well now. Quotations
today ranged as high as 17 Vie for
liens with few in sight. In spite of
the fine weather and stock more plen

lirmer than yesterday, the best Oregon
stock, candled, commanding as high as

POTATOES IN IOOIt Q EM AND
' The potato market Is decidedly dull
the top price paid growers being about
SO cents. One dealer on Front street
this morn:ng received a letter from
Montana offering 75 car loads at 80
cent. In commenting on the offer
he said he believed SO carloads could
be' obtained here on short notice were
HO cents offered. This, he declared.

It is pointed out, however, that with
the completion of the Panama canal
Iotat it rowers will havo a better od

ties of market not now within reach
of this suction. It ia believed that the
.Atlantic coast cities will afford good
markets for Oregon and pOsslblv Mon

sections.
CAULIFLOWER IS ABUNDANT
As a result of heavy receipts the
price on cauliflower has tnkcn a sud

the charges were $3. The price had

The result wu he had the, very dis

"Of course," said the merchant, "the

Oregon Fund Suit

Attorney-General Crawford Is Defeated
ia Circuit Coart ia His Effort to' Re
cover Prom the State Board.
(Salem Boreas of The Journal.)
j Salem, Or, March 21. Notice of ap
peal to the supreme court in the peni
tentiary revolving fund case has been
served by tha attorney general, who
lost in tha circuit court.
This suit was brought by Attorney
General Crawford to recover from
Governor West. Secretary of State Ol
cott and State Treasurer Kay, members
of the state board, approximately $16,
000 spent from the old penitentiary
revolving fund for the conduct of the
prison brick yard, the purchase of sup
plies and equipment and a piece of land
for use in connection with the brick
yard. The attorney general contended
that there was no law authorising
the fund, and that its use was illegal.
.Circuit Judge Kelly sustained a de
murrer to the complaint on the ground
that Mr. Crawford did not allege any
damages to the state. The attorney
general amended the complaint, alleg
ing that the state was damaged. When
the case came before Judge Kelly the
second time he dismissed the suit on
the ground that Crawford failed to
show wherein the state was damaged.

Several Hundred Additions to T. M. O.
A. Enrollment as Besnlt of Past
Week's Campaign.
With an enthusiastic campaign that
will doubtless. Increase the enrollment
of the Portland Young Men's Chris

today, the week's membership contest
of that institution is being "brought to
a close. Final reports will be received
this evening at 7 o'clock being the hour
that the canvassing Is to stop. The
results will be made known as quickly
as they can be complied, and the prizes
awarded.
The rival forces led by J. E. Werlein
and F. N, Clark are putting in a busy
day for supremacy. Werlein and bis
team have had a decided advantage up
to yesterday when the Clark faction
took a spurt and ran up a score for
the day of 54,200 points to their op
ponents' 37.175. This reduced the lead
to wlnthln striking distance and it is
11.833 14,448 now nip and tuck for first place. Wal
ter Krupke is expected to win the gold
watch offered for the high individual
score, having 41,950 points to his credit
last night to 21,150 for his nearest
competitor. J. K. Day's team of 10
men, to which Mr. Krupke belongs,
will doubtless carry off the nonois
among the small groups.
It is expected that the added mem
bership for the week will amount to
about 600, exclusive of gains made by
the Sellwood Y. M. C. A. which itself
has had a prosperous week. The origi
nal goal was 1000 new names for the
week, but this mark was purposely put
high. However, It Is known that the
teams have considerable reserve
strength and the showing tonight may
be a genuine surprise.
