Funeral to Be Held Tomorrow Will Be Distrlb-

Ex-Mayor Henry 8. Rowe, a Portland
pioneer end railroad man., died at his
ranch on Sauries' island yesterday
morning". While his death was wholly
unexpected and a treat shock to his
numerous friends In this city, it was
' known that he had suffered In the last
year or two with heart trouble. He went
down to Ms ranch Wednesday after
noon, announcing at the time he left
his office that he proposed to take a
week's rest In the country.
The funeral wiy be held tomorrow
afternoon at 8 o'clock from the Scot
tish Rite Cathedral, at Morrison and
Lownsdale, and will be in charge of
Portland Lodge No. 55. A. K. and A. M.
Mr. Rowe was a native of New Tork
state. He was born October 11, 1881,
and was In his 63d year. With his
father's family he came west at an
early age, and when he was 11 years
old h went to work as a telegrapher
for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St.
Paul railroad.
In 1170 he moved to Lawrence, Kan
sas, and went to work for the Santa
Fe system. He was soon made gen
eral agent of that road at Lawrence.
In 1880 he came to Oregon and ac
cepted employment with the Oregon
Railroad & Navigation company. For
a time he was In the O. R. & N. steam
boat service, later entering the train
service of that company as general
superintendent of the Columbia River
line.
In 1899 he became president of the
Yakima National bank. Three years
later he organized the Albina Savings
bank and became its president. He
returned to the railroad business in
1902 as general Portland agent of the
Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul line.
Two years ago he retired from the rail
way business to devote his attention
to real estate. He was elected mayor
of Portland in 1900 and served until
1902.
He Is survived by the widow and two
sons Donald, who Is in the employ of
Waddell A Harrington, and Harry, who
is in the Seattle office of the Mil
waukee railroad.
