his course of Bible study before the

nesday Tat 3 o'clock In room A of the
Central library. The subject will be
"Prophecy." which Rabbi Wise states
is the most weighty factor in the re
ligion of the white race and the least
understood. Due to the misunder
standing of the idea and the .function
as well aa the place of the prophet and
prophecy, the most remarkable error
that the mind is heir to was commit

WHAT CHURCH MEMBERS
AND. CLERGY ARE DOING
SOME REMARKS ON SUBJECT OF RELIGION
By James Hardy Bennett, Pastor Union Avenue Church.
4, 1;
I 11 S:S I
I i
James Hardy Bennett, : Pastor
Union Avenue Church.
One of tbe most
practical men of
tbe Apostolic age
waa James, the au
thor of the Epistle
which' bears his
name. Men who
are not practical
are not very val
uable In religious
work or any other
work.
James gives a
fine practical def
inition of religion:
"Pure religion and
undef lied b e f o re
God and the Fath
er la tbls: To visit the fatherless and
widows In their affliction, and 'keep
almaelf unspotted from the world."
The man whose religion Is alive and
Vital will express It in charitable and
brotherly conduct and purity of life.
Religion la not just a holy groan on
Sunday, accompanied by a long face
and chronic complaints.
Tha Christian religion does not need
any revision. It never will need it.
But many people who claim to know
Its' power and blessedness need to re
vise their conduct and conversation. In
order that tha world may look upon our
faith as a system of good cheer and
mutual helpfulness.
One of tha prominent features in
tha life and teachings of Jesus waa
that ha had nothing to hide. He prac
tload no deception on anyone. He
atatad frankly and plainly what he
knew to be facta.
...
Man who make no preteaslons to
ward being religious. form their est!
' mate of religion from what they see
in those who profess to' be controlled
by the principles of the gospel of
Christ. Let Christians then live above
reproach, that the gospel be not
blamed.
The Christian should always live a
life that is "an open book known and
read of all men." For
"Behold what a tangled web we weave.
When first -we practice to deceive."
Religion is very largely a thing of
the thoughts; for "as a man thlnketh
in bis heart so is he." If the heart
Is dominated by the spirit of God the
thoughts of the mind may be freely
expressed, for they will not be evil.
One of the chief hindrances standing
In the way of religion is the deceitful
ness of many who claim to be guided
by its great truths. Let a man have
the courage of his convictions, say
what' he means and mean what he
nays, do what he promises, and he will
have his enemies, and many strong
friends, on of whom will be that
"friend that sticketh closer than a
brother."
A woman who wants to deceive a
man never lets him think that she
thinks that be isn't what he thinks she
think he is. And the real thoughts of
the mind, covered up constitute a de
ceptive character, rom which religion
Is shut out.
Jesus was very plain in telling one
of bis best friends, Peter, Just where
his mistakes and evils were, and it
made Peter a man of rock.
I am very confident that "Jesus was
conceived of the Holy Ghost and born
of the Virgin Mary," but whether you
believe that or not, get busy and do
the things which Jesus said do and you
will be a better and happier man or
woman, and the future for this world
and. tha next will be much brighter to
you.

the discussion of the subject, "How to
Arouse the Interest of Business Men,"
being led by XV. D. Wheelwright. His
paper was so clear a statement of the
objections of the opponents of Chris
tianity and religion generally, and of
the validity of the answers to such
objections, that it waa unanimously
agreed by the men in attendance that
the address should be preserved in per
manent form; steps to this end are be
ing taken. After deploring what, he
held to be a mistake and error of the
church in antagonizing advanced aclen
tlfic knowledge, and especially tbe
theory of evolution, Mr. Wheelwright
quoted from John Flake:
The lesson of evolution ia that,
through all these weary ages the hu
man soul has not been cherishing In
religion a delusive phantom, but In
spite of seemingly endless groplnsr and
stumbling, it has been rising to the
recognition of its essential kinship with
the ever livinr God. Of all the Impli
cations of the doctrine of evolution
with regard to man, I believe the very
deepest and strongest to be that which
asserts the everlasting reality of re
ligion.
