HOBBS aaaaaaaaaaBaBaHaaBaaaaa4aMM Alleged Bad Conditions at Cove Will Be Investigated by Governor's Secretary. , (Salem Baresa of The Joarnal.) Salem. Or., Feb. 20. In response to an appeal for aid from a mother who ays she la often compelled to defend her children from attacks by her drunken husband, to whom the saloon keeper, at Cove, in Union county, per sists In selling liquor In spite of her protests, and who obtained no relief when she appeared to the district attor ney. Governor West Is preparing to send Miss Fern Ilobbs to Cove next Monday- to make an Investigation, and If the laws are being disregarded an other shake-up In an eastern Oregon town may ba expected. The woman who appealed to tha governor Is Mrs. Amy Valentine. She says: "I hava tried every other means (and failed) for help in my trouble. My last appeal Is to you for advice. My husband Is a drunkard and be cause the habit was formed, (unknown to me) before .marriage, the law will . not free me. He is drunk for weeks at time. I sent a written order two different times to the Cove saloon keener, begging him not to let my husband have liquor, as It made him dangerous. Often I have to stand be tween him and an open knife or loaded gun, and my children.- He disregarded my orders. Then, I went to our state attorney. He said I bad a good case, but I would have to make a civil suit of it. The state would not bother with It. 'Will you please advise file what to do. Your In an earnest anneal." Governor West said lie understood that the precinct in which Cove Is situated had voted dry, but ihat the vote had been disregarded. Thim point will be Investigated by Miss Hobbs, who led the invasion of Copperfield a few weeks ago when the governor clamped the lid on that own! because the liquor laws were being violated and the town was in control of a aa loon clique. . Miss Hobbs will be instructed also to find out why the district attorney has been Indifferent, if it la true that Cove should be dry territory or that a saloon Keeper is selling liquor to a habitual drunkard when requested not to. if there Is foundation for the woman's letter, there Is every indl cation that something is going to nappen at cove. Miss Hobbs will leave Mondav for cove. Two More File. fialem. Or.. TTVti 2n A itnrn.v n.n eral A. M.
