In the Famous
Sacramento
The home pf prosperity and of
plenty. ' Soil, water, sunshine
and profit all the year round.
Recorded crops sem- almost fabulous'
in this richly productive-seotlon, yet
the following figures have been veri
fied and the achievements Qf farmers
heretofore attained can be duplicated:
Alfalfa, slxj crops 12 -tons an acre, a
yeur. Hops, 3000 pounds an acre. Po
tatoes. 800 sacks or 800 bushels an
acre. Garden truck, all kinds, three crops
a year. Beanu?4 40 sacks an acr. Sugar i
beets, SO tons an acre.
All the above without mention of I
the most lucrative, probably, of all pur
suits in the Sacramento river valley !
that of dairying. With ample produc
tion of alfalfa for stock food, the herds
have become famous for sleek, healthy
condition and have set many high rec
ords for production of milk rich in but
ter fats.
This is the .greatest empire in the
world, considered from all standpoints,
such as climate, soil, water, diversity
of products, acessibility to mountains,
ocean, cities, parks, etc., where one can
drive on paved highways for hundreds
of miles and can use an auto every day
In the year with real pleasure. Cali
fornia has certainly the finest system
of paved roads and boulevarus In the
world.
Railroads both electric and steam,
give communication and shipping facil
ities unequalcd, bringing the market
gardener within easy reach of his point
of disposal, tue orchardlst and hop
grower close to their warehouses and
the sugar beet farmer near to his fac
tory. The Sacramento river is one of the
two great Inland waterways of the
state and shipments can be made direct
by boat from Rlvergarden Farms to the
markets of Sacramento, San Francisco
and the world. .
The soil, which the United States gov
ernment reports to be a fine sandy loam,
36 feet deep a river sediment soli, the
richest and best agricultural land in
the world, because It is sublrrlgated, no
grading or leveling Is necessary and no
surfuee,lrrigatfon is, required. ; .
This' property never overflows and
there is no malaria Or pests.
An Expert's Opinion
Professor El wood Mead, who has
made many Investigations of soil and
agricultural projects for the United
States government, In which analysis of
vitalizing, principles and adaptability to
certain croos were reauired. sDeakine
of this seotlon, said:
"Within a radius of five miles in the
Sacramento valley I saw every product
which I could call to mind. Apples and
oranges grew side by side, as did oak
ana aimona trees, mere .were ouves
from the south and c.erries from tne
north. A date palm seemed equally at
home with an alfalfa meadow; figs and
tokay grapes were apparently as much
in their element as the fields of wheat
and barley or the rows of Indian corn,
some of the stalks of which measured
16 feet in height. All of these could
Jmve been growm on a single acre, and
doubtless have been."
