Aro in the Park.
Salem is today the one bright spot on
tho map of the world. Buyers, accord
ing to report, are willing to pay Salem
dealers from 1 to 2c a pound more for
supplies than they offer Portland deal
ers for the Mine quality, a most un
usual situation and one scarcely be
lievable. Kola Nets Is reported tho Salem buyer
who has been able td get these high
priced orders put of nil unwilling mar
ket while, buyers are not willing to even
look $ other dealers.
locally there has been a fair amount
of business reported In the hop market.
No sales are reported for the account
of Portland dealers above 23c a pound
but Kola Nela of Salem Is reported to
hflve purchased a handful at 25c. Joe
Harris of Salem, who is operating with
l,uchiiiuml, is reported the purchaser of
153 lmU of the Otto Hansen lot at
24e and N6 bnles from another grower
at a similar price.
Harrv Ij, Hart Hop company of this
city purchased through Kalph Williams
100 bales at Dallas at 23c and made the
purchase of the Beermart lot of 142 bales
at Silverton at 21c.
Clrlbble of Kurora purchased 178 bales
of the IJunluven lot at Brooks at 22c.
Some business Is reported in western
Washington at 23c, but little of It can
be fully confirmed. Cable advices from
Kngland do not bear out the bullish talk
heard at Salem, but it is quite possible
that the reports arc true, although the
trade here Is at u loss to understand
conditions when they are unable to land
any of these high priced orders.

0A Ben Dvis, once considered the
most despised of the apple family by
many orchardlnts, is this year making
history for Iteelf and Incidentally fill
ing the bank books of those that grow it.
Notwithstanding the fact that the
Ben Davis has little favor with the
American apple buying public, it Is re
ceived with favor by those sections that
are looking for a bright red fruit that
lias the most extreme Keeping quality.
"While we sold some Ben Davis ap
ples early In tin season at advantageou
prices," frays W. F. Qwln. general man
ager of the Northwestern Fruit Kx
change, "we later decided to hold for
more money. At the start of the sea
son we sold 10,000 boxes of Rogue
River stock, orchard run at $1.10 and
sold all that the Cashmere people had
to offer at $1.26 for their best grade.
"Now we have decided to give our
friends in Kurope a chance at some of
these apples and we feel that we will
be amply repaid In dollars and cents for
this, The shipments are now en route
to Kurope. ,
"The Ben Davis apple Is a very popu
lar one in places remote from easy
transportation. That Is the reason why
China annually takes such a liberal sup
ply of this variety. It is one of the
best bakinK apples grown and is quits
popular In many places for that reason.
"This season was practically a failure
for tho Ben Davis crop everywhere. The
apple growing sections of the middle
west that produce heavily of this va
riety as a usual rule, had little to offer
this year. On this account values
climbed higher than usual and the de
mand was quite brisk."
At this time tho Yellow Newtown Is
the real big seller in the apple trade.
Ry far orlds It is In biggest demand.
The Northwestern Fruit Exchange re-
Vorts last sules of this variety around
1.85, but i.M today holding firm at $2.
There are few cars of Spitzenbergs
available, but the demand is not exten

cient for the trade. The price generully
